The defeat officially eliminated the Jets from playoff contention, making it 14 straight seasons that they have failed to make the postseason — the longest playoff drought across all major American sports.

The Jets offense actually had one of their most productive games this season against the Dolphins.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 339 yards, the first time he has thrown for 300 yards since the 2021 season, while receivers Garrett Wilson (114 yards) and Davante Adams (109 yards) also put up decent numbers.

However, that production matters little when the Jets’ defense — supposedly the strength of the team — struggle to get anywhere near the opposition quarterback.

The same sorry D couldn’t stop the Dolphins scoring in OT, resulting in the Jets blowing their fifth game this season when leading in the fourth quarter.

The Jets built their team around four-time NFL MVP Rodgers two seasons ago and it’s been an unmitigated disaster.

The team in green went 7-10 in 2023 with Rodgers seeing just four snaps after tearing his Achilles on his MetLife debut.

This year, Rodgers has played in every game and the Jets are currently sitting at 3-10 with the potential to finish 7-10 if they win their remaining four games.

Rodgers was brought in to replace the young QBs who had failed in New York, most recently Zach Wilson and Sam Darnold, but somehow they’ve gotten worse.

He currently has the worst win percentage (.230) for the franchise since 2018.

Wilson posted a 12-21 record (.364) as the team’s starter, with Darnold at 13-25 (.342).

Both were largely scapegoated by New York fans and media for not being good enough, and NFL legend Shannon Sharpe thinks Wilson, who in particular endured heavy criticism as a Jet, is owed an apology.

“All I know is that New York fans, y’all owe Zach Wilson an apology,” the three-time Super Bowl winning tight end said on his ‘Nightcap’ podcast.

“And say, we want to apologize to you personally, Zach Wilson. And apologize to me too. Because it wasn’t you.”

Darnold was selected third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL draft and was the team’s starter from 2018 to 2020 before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021.

Now, he’s playing at an MVP-calibre level for an 11-2 Minnesota Vikings team battling the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles at the top of the NFC.

Wilson, meanwhile, was selected second overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL draft.

He served as the Jets’ starter during his first three seasons, but inconsistent play saw him largely derided by the Jets fanbase and led to him being traded to the Broncos in 2024 to be their third string signal caller.

Swapping Wilson for Rodgers was initially viewed as a major upgrade that would immediately put the Jets in Super Bowl contention.

It hasn’t panned out like that, though, with Rodgers himself admitting he’s played his part in falling short of expectations.

“I’ve started for one year, I’m a part of it for one year,” he said after the Dolphins defeat. “Disappointing.”

“Yeah the expectations were high, and we didn’t reach them. Not anywhere close,” he admitted.

Now 41, it remains to be seen what Rodgers does next, although a return to the Jets next season appears increasingly unlikely.
