Why are four NFL teams teams wearing special holiday Christmas patches on their jerseys?
The NFL is ushering in a new holiday tradition this Christmas. In Weeks 16 and 17, select teams will take to the field decked out in uniforms with a festive-inspired patch. To celebrate the occasion, the four competing teams in the NFL Holiday Remix — the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Pittsburgh Steelers — will wear the holiday-inspired uniform patch. The patch will be worn during their games on Saturday, December 21, and again on Christmas Day. The Chiefs take on the Texans in Week 16 while the Ravens face the Steelers. A week later, those matchups will be shaken up, with just two games taking place on Christmas Day — the Chiefs vs the Steelers, and the Ravens vs the Texans — meaning every team playing on 25 December will be wearing the special holiday jersey patch. As yet, the NFL hasn’t indicated where the patch will be worn, but it’ll likely be in the same location as the recent Madden Thanksgiving patches, which is on the chest. “The NFL on Christmas has become a holiday staple with families coming together to celebrate and watch NFL games,” said Tim Ellis, NFL executive vice president of marketing. “This year, we look forward to the start of a new holiday tradition with Netflix which will be seen around the world, and these holiday-inspired uniform patches are a great touch to mark this special occasion.” The festive patch features the iconic NFL shield in front of two candy canesNFL CJ Stroud will be rocking it on his uniform when the Texans face the Chiefs and RavensGetty The NFL has played on Christmas Day for years. In total, the NFL has played 30 games on Christmas Day prior to the 2024 season. The league first played games on Christmas Day in 1971 and held games on the holiday on a semi-regular basis beginning in 1989. From 1989 to 2019, the NFL had typically scheduled games on Christmas Day if it fell on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. But starting in 2020, the league has scheduled at least one Christmas game every season, even when the holiday falls on a day in which the NFL does not usually schedule games. The NBA has historically dominated Christmas Day but that’s changed in recent times. Last year’s three Christmas Day games (Las Vegas Raiders vs Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens vs San Francisco 49ers) ranked among the top 25 most-viewed TV programs of 2023, with the Raiders-Chiefs game being the second most-watched Christmas Day NFL game on record. This year begins the first of a three-season partnership with Netflix to broadcast NFL games on Christmas Day. The Chiefs vs the Steelers and the Ravens vs the Texans is part of a Netflix doubleheader as the streaming platform continues to get into live sporting events following the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul boxing match. The games are set to be star-studded events, with the queen of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey, kicking things off on Christmas Day with a taped performance of her classic holiday hit ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. Beyoncé will perform songs for the halftime game in Houston between the Texans and Ravens from her country album ‘Cowboy Carter’. According to reports, the league has agreed to extend the singer’s halftime performance from the usual 15 minutes to almost 20 minutes so that she has more time to perform.
