West Ham United vs Arsenal predictions

After back-to-back wins following the November international break, Arsenal fans are hoping their team has got its mojo back.

The Gunners appeared to be wobbling a few weeks back. There was a sequence of five games in which they only emerged triumphant once – and that was against second-tier Preston North End in the EFL Cup.

Mikel Arteta’s men impressed last weekend, though, as they swept surprise package Nottingham Forest away in a 3-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

They followed that up with an even more impressive display a few days later, thrashing Sporting CP 5-1 in the Champions League to climb into the top eight of the league phase table.

The return to full fitness of Martin Odegaard has undoubtedly helped. Arsenal really missed their captain and creator-in-chief. Odegaard is the man who knits their possession play together, and the whole team looks more coherent with him in it.

It was surely not a coincidence that Arsenal produced one of their best displays of the campaign against Sporting when they had virtually a full complement of players available again (Ben White was the only absentee who would get into a full-strength XI).

Of course, injuries are part and parcel of football and Arsenal cannot expect to have an empty treatment room for the whole season. Moreover, they have arguably been guilty of accepting the excuses too readily. This is a squad game and they are far from the only team in the country that has had to cope without key components.

The mood at the Emirates Stadium is more positive than it was a month ago, but the fact remains that Arsenal cannot afford to drop too many more points for the remainder of the season. Liverpool are setting a relentless pace at the summit of the standings, with Arsenal already nine points adrift of Arne Slot’s side.

Their next seven Premier League games are all against teams currently outside the top eight. Arsenal need to be looking at a minimum of 18 points from those matches ahead of trickier meetings with Brighton & Hove Albion, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in January.

Consistency is the key for clubs with big ambitions. Arsenal need to go to the London Stadium on Saturday and get the job done in a professional manner.

Arsenal will be looking to pick up another three points when they take on West Ham United.

West Ham United picked up a much-needed win on Monday night, as they triumphed 2-0 over Newcastle United. 

That result eased some of the pressure on Julen Lopetegui, who had endured a mediocre start to his tenure at the London Stadium. 

West Ham are now up to 14th in the table, six points clear of the bottom three. That is doubtless a welcome buffer.

It was a disciplined display from the Hammers last time out, but there are still some big question marks over the balance of the team. West Ham are giving up too many chances and Arsenal have the quality to exploit that.

On the plus side, Lopetegui has plenty of attacking quality at his disposal and Arsenal have conceded in each of their last six away games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Arsenal made a fast start against Nottingham Forest last weekend, with Bukayo Saka putting them ahead in the 15th minute.

They were even quicker out of the blocks in Tuesday’s clash with Sporting CP, when Arsenal scored in the first seven minutes and were 3-0 up at half-time.

Only Liverpool have a better first-half record than Arsenal in the Premier League this season – and there is not much between the two teams.

West Ham, for their part, have struggled from minutes one to 45. They have been ahead at the interval in just two of their 12 top-flight games.

Arsenal will aim to take control of proceedings from the get-go and we like their chances of being in the lead at 6.20pm.

Bukayo Saka to score or assist

Bukayo Saka is one of the best forwards in the world. He has many excellent attributes, but his reliability is right up there at the top of the list.

Saka is still relatively young at 23, but it is rare to see him make a wrong decision in the final third.

He scored a tremendous goal against Nottingham Forest last weekend and converted a penalty in the 5-1 thumping of Sporting CP, as well as setting up Kai Havertz for the second goal.

Saka continually impacts matches by either creating chances or converting them. No one would be surprised if he had his say in east London on Saturday.
