Chelsea will be looking to continue their progress under head coach Enzo Maresca when they welcome Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge this weekend. 

The Blues are third in the Premier League with 22 points, ahead of Arsenal and Brighton on goal difference, and just one point behind second placed Manchester City.

If the Blues can win on Sunday, and Pep’s City team fails to beat Liverpool later in the day, they could find themselves second in the Premier League. That’s some progress from where they have been in recent seasons. 

Chelsea has won two of their last five in the Premier League, drawing two, and losing one. The wins came against Leicester (2-1) and Newcastle (2-1). The draws were with Manchester United (1-1) and Arsenal (1-1), and the defeat was against Liverpool (2-1) at Anfield.

They have stuttered a little bit results-wise. But no one would say that they aren’t progressing, as that is a tough run of fixtures for any team, and Chelsea has come through it in good shape.

Villa fans may argue that Chelsea is still in their tough run of fixtures. But a look at their recent form shows that the Claret and Blue have no wins in their last seven in all competitions. 

Furthermore, Villa have won only one in their last five in the Premier League and they are four without a win in the English top flight. 

Last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace would have hurt. Palace have been woeful this season. Despite this, Villa still had to come from behind twice to gain a point.

Villa has also lost away to Liverpool (2-0) and Spurs (4-1) in their poor run of form. There were more dropped points at Villa Park when the Claret and Blue were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth on Matchweek 9. 

We have to go all the way back to Matchweek 8 and the 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage to find the last time Villa won a Premier League match, with their last win in all competitions coming against Bologna in the Champions League the following Tuesday (22nd October). 

It would seem that Villa are finding the combination of Premier League and Champions League difficult to cope with. That is understandable. 

In Europe, the Villans have had some brilliant results, and they look well on course to qualify for the knockout stages. 

The 1-0 home win over Bayern Munich was the highlight. That was followed by a rather stale 0-0 draw with Manchester United the following Sunday.

On Wednesday they held their own in a 0-0 draw with Juventus at Villa Park. But this is where the problem lies. How will they back it up on Sunday?

Chelsea will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing an Aston Villa team that hasn’t won any of their last seven.

The Blues will be refreshed after changing 10 of the 11 that played against Leicester last weekend for the Europa Conference League win over Heidenheim. Villa won’t have that luxury, with the majority of their players playing their third match in nine days. 

Villa has scored in four of their last five Premier League matches. Only Liverpool managed to shut them out. The Lions have conceded in all five as well.

We can’t see Villa winning. A draw may be as good as it gets. 

Chelsea to win or draw, and both teams to score is 9/10 in the Double Chance/Both teams to score market. That looks like a good value bet.

But you can get 15/8 on the Blues to win and both teams to score. Given the current form of both teams, that looks the better wager to place.

Chelsea to score over 1.5 goals

Chelsea have been sharing the goals around a bit in recent weeks. Not including the Europa Conference League, which is proving to be a walk in the park for the Blues, they have scored six in their last five in all competitions. 

Included in that run were the difficult draws with Arsenal and Manchester United, along with the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the EFL Cup. The scorers have been Nicolas Jackson (2), Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernandez.  

Only in the 2-1 win over Newcastle did Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer find the net in the same match. Since then, Jackson scored with Fernandez away at Leicester last week. That was only the second match in that run the Blues have managed to score two in. 

Chelsea are coming out of their difficult run now. They are facing a Villa side that are up for the Champions League matches, but seem to hit a lull in the following Premier League fixtures. 

Furthermore, Villa conceded four at Spurs and two at Liverpool. They are very open at the back, and it would be no shock to see the Blues put at least two past the Villans.

Following on from the theme that Villa are open, they do play a high line that may play right into the hands of Nicolas Jackson. 

Jackson is one of the many Chelsea stars who looks like a different player under the guidance of Enzo Maresca this season. 

Already in this campaign the 23-year-old has seven goals and three assists. Last season, Jackson scored 14 goals in 35 appearances, he looks on course to smash that total this season.

He returned to goalscoring form against Leicester last Saturday, and at 6/4, we say he is a good value wager to get another against a Villa side that struggle to keep clean sheets.
