Tottenham vs Fulham predictions

Only one point separates Spurs and Fulham in the top half of the Premier League. Spurs are sixth with 19 points from 12 matches, Fulham are ninth with 18 points. 

One area where there is a huge disparity is in the goal difference. 

Spurs are +14, having scored 27 goals (the most in the Premier League) and conceded 13 (only Liverpool and Arsenal have conceded less). Fulham have a level goal difference, scoring and conceding 17.

It’s fair to say Tottenham’s statistics are bizarre.

They have won three and lost two of their last five in the Premier League. Their most recent victory was the stunning 4-0 win away at Manchester City last Saturday. The Lilywhites have also recorded 4-1 home wins over Aston Villa and West Ham.

Somewhat contradictory, they have managed to lose 1-0 away to second-from-bottom Crystal Palace and 2-1 at home to Ipswich. The wins for Palace and Ipswich are their only victories this season in the Premier League.

Overall, it’s hard to know what to make of Tottenham Hotspur. 

If we’re dealing in cold hard facts, in all competitions, Spurs have won one of their last four and five of their last ten. It’s hardly inspiring stuff. But included in those statistics are some great wins, and some unbelievable defeats.

The 1-0 defeat to relegation threatened Crystal Palace was on October 27th. Following that loss, they defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the EFL Cup and Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League.

Since then, Spurs have lost 3-2 at Galatasaray, and 2-1 at home to Ipswich. They followed those two poor defeats up with a 4-0 win over Manchester City. Then in typical Spurs fashion, it was back down to earth with a bump when they drew 2-2 with Roma in the Europa League on Thursday.

Fulham has been far more steady. 

The Cottagers have won two, lost two and drawn one in their last five Premier League fixtures. The five match run started with a 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, followed by a 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison. 

Back-to-back wins against Brentford (2-1) at Craven Cottage and away at Crystal Palace (2-0) followed. But their most recent, and probably most disappointing result, was a 4-1 home defeat to struggling Wolves last Saturday. 

In team news, Spurs are without keeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian is out for several weeks following ankle surgery this week. The experienced Fraser Forster is set to deputise. 

Two-goal hero against Manchester City last Saturday, James Maddison, started the Roma match on the bench. He will surely come back into the team for Sunday. Although, given some of Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou’s bizarre team selections in recent weeks, who knows.

Fulham will be without the injured Harrison Reed and Joachim Andersen.

Trying to predict which version of Spurs is going to turn up is nearly impossible. How can a team go from losing 2-1 at home to Ipswich, to winning 4-0 at the Etihad against Manchester City?

Fulham, though, were abysmal in their 4-1 home defeat to Wolves last Saturday. Especially after going 1-0 up. And this, after back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

Spurs to win and over 1.5 goals

We have already established that it is hard to know which version of Spurs will turn up. 

But one thing we do know is if it’s the good version, Spurs generally win with a few goals in the match. 

At home this season the Lilywhites have won four and lost two. In the four victories, they have beaten Everton 4-0, Brentford 3-1, West Ham 4-1, and Aston Villa 4-1.

The chances are, if Spurs win, there will be at least two goals, probably more.

Spurs are an attractive price to win at 3/4. But given the amount of goals in their matches, it’s well worth taking the better odds and backing them to win with over 1.5 goals in the match.

Over 2.5 goals have also been scored in four of Fulham’s last six matches, with both teams scoring in five of those fixtures. 

We know in the Premier League this season, plenty of goals have been scored in matches involving Spurs. It is 40 in 12 games to be exact. 

Based on those stats, there is almost an argument for backing over 3.5 goals and both teams to score. We are not pushing the boat out too far, as this match does have a look of 2-1 about it.

Dejan Kulusevski to score or assist

Ange Postecoglou has named some strange teams in recent weeks. 

We had the bizarre situation of James Maddison starting on the bench against Villa and Ipswich, only to score twice when he was recalled to start against Manchester City last weekend. 

Even Heung-min Son hasn’t escaped. The captain looked very annoyed to say the least when he got hooked off against Aston Villa after just 56 minutes of the match with the game still in the balance at 1-1.

One man who has been consistent throughout this period is Dejan Kulusevski. 

The Swedish international regularly plays the full 90 minutes for Spurs in the league, showing what a valuable member of the squad he has become.

In recent weeks, Kulusevski’s performances have been starting to yield goal contributions. In recent weeks he has provided assists in the wins over Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Kulusevski is 9/4 to assist. That looks a good bet for a man with two in his last three Premier League outings. He has only scored twice this season, but in recent weeks has looked threatening, which is why we are covering both options for the shorter odds.
