Ties Were So Back at Paris Fashion Week

StyleOnce a symbol of dressing like a square, the necktie is the most whimsical accessory of the season.By The Editors of GQPhotography by Christina FragkouJanuary 27, 2025Christina FragkouSave this storySaveSave this storySaveAh, neckties. The archetypal flourish of Western menswear. After a blockbuster run over several generations of menswear history, the 21st century hasn’t exactly been a favorable time for the accessory; the tie, unsurprisingly, became the (quite literal) symbol of the chokehold of capitalism and the corporate grindset. For years, public-facing men—from career politicians to Hollywood A-listers—have been eschewing them entirely. But as of late, and particularly while the fashion-loving public made their post-pandemic pivot to dressing up again, menswear fiends have led the necktie renaissance. When deployed properly, ties suddenly feel whimsical, jaunty, and cool. Hell, even subversive. That said, there’s plenty of margin for error. (If you learned to tie a tie using a Windsor knot, please familiarize yourself with the four-in-hand instead.)For example, while the tech cronies at Trump’s inauguration got their ties so, so wrong, the stylish folks at the latest Paris Fashion Week got them so, so right. In the French capital, our photographer Christina Fragkou documented all the ways the fellas are actually making ties great again: by layering them under Canadian tuxedos, bomber jackets, and beautiful wool coats, or pretty much anything else you can imagine.
