'The Day of the Jackal' two-episode finale is here, giving fans long-awaited answers about Bianca and the Jackal's international cat-and-mouse chase
Warning: This post contains spoilers for the final two episodes of The Day of the Jackal season 1.
The cat-and-mouse chase between Bianca (Lashana Lynch) and the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) has officially come to an end.
On Thursday, Dec. 12, the final two episodes of The Day of the Jackal season 1 premiered, giving fans some long-awaited answers about whether the elusive assassin was able to take out his target, UGC (Khalid Abdalla), whether Bianca was able to track him down after weeks of trying and what his wife Nuria (Úrsula Corberó) is going to do now that she's aware of his real career.
How did The Day of the Jackal season 1 end?
After failing to take out UGC in Tallin, the Jackal returned home to his wife and son, and he and Nuria finally had an honest conversation about his line of work where he admitted that he kills people for money. He then made her a promise that he had one final job to finish and then he was done with being an assassin-for-hire.
Before Charles could leave to make his final attempt to kill UGC, Nuria's brother Alvaro asks him to come to lunch with a sketchy Cuban businessman, Jimmy Tejero. Though he agreed to go, Charles instead borrowed a friend's fishing boat and killed Jimmy from over a kilometer away with his sniper — a kill that eventually helped Bianca narrow down that the Jackal lives in Cádiz, Spain.
Bianca, meanwhile, was encouraged to take a leave of absence from MI-6 due to her refusal to give up on hunting the Jackal. Instead, she quit and walked off on her boss Isabel (Lia Williams), vowing to use her newfound free time to fix her rocky relationship with her husband Paul (Sule Rimi) and daughter Jasmine (Florisa Kamar).
Her break didn't last long, though, as Isabel's secret allegiance with the foreign secretary — who was also working with Timothy Winthorp, who hired the Jackal to kill UGC — was revealed, and led Isabel to encourage Bianca to go rogue, find the Jackal and take him out — all as a means of ultimately getting rid of both the elusive assassin and Bianca herself.
Desperate as ever to nail the Jackal, Bianca of course agreed to the "unsanctioned" mission and brought along Vince (Nick Blood) to Cádiz, Spain, where she'd deduced the Jackal must live based on the sniper death of Jimmy Tejero.
Nuria, meanwhile, got fed up with her husband's deadly profession and abandoned him, taking their son Carlito with her as she fled their home.
Who dies at the end of The Day of the Jackal season 1?
In episode 9, the Jackal headed to Croatia where he hired a boat to take him birding — or so he claimed — as a ruse to get as close as possible to UGC's private island. After taking out a bodyguard first, the Jackal succeeded at taking out the notorious entrepreneur — who he had been hired to kill by Timothy Winthorp (Charles Dance), a wealthy New York City businessman who was keen to stop UGC's economic transparency platform, River, from launching.
UGC bled out in the water after the Jackal shot him in the head from over two miles away, and the penultimate episode ended with him fleeing the scene while being pursued by UGC's security team.
In episode 10, several other major characters died including Nuria's brother Alvaro, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time as he showed up drunk at her and Charles' house just as Bianca and Vince walked in and they shot him immediately.
The Jackal heard that gunshot and after a tip from Zina (Eleanor Matsuura) that his home in Spain had been discovered, he hid from Bianca and Vince as they searched his house. Hidden in the secret room behind his two-way mirror, he finally had the chance to take in the British intelligence officer who'd been hunting him for weeks, though she of course couldn't see him.
Eventually, he made himself known to Bianca and Vince and killed them both — Vince died first, protecting Bianca, and the Jackal then killed Bianca, too, ending their international cat-and-mouse chase with a bang (literally).

Does the Jackal survive at the end of season 1?
Despite the odds, the Jackal seems to remain unkillable. After taking out Bianca and Vince, Charles rushed to the airport to try to catch his wife and son before they fled the country. As he left a voicemail for Nuria — who had thrown away her cellphone before going into the airport — Charles' car was attacked from the side and the back in a coordinated attack meant to take him out.
The episode's final scene revealed that he survived the crash — though he didn't emerge entirely unscathed and had an array of cuts and scars along his temple and cheek — which surprised even Zina.

Is there going to be a season 2 of The Day of the Jackal?
The Day of the Jackal was renewed for a season 2 in November before the first season had even finished airing.
At the end of episode 10, there were several revelations that set up new mysteries for season 2, both for the Jackal himself and for those trying to take him out.
At MI-6, Isabel was promoted and covered up her involvement in Bianca and Vince's deaths by telling Osita (Chukwudi Iwuji) that they'd gone rogue. She was of course unaware that Bianca had prepared for exactly that kind of denial and had texted Osita, "Isabel sent me to take out the Jackal. If I don't make it, you know what happened."
The Jackal meanwhile turned up in Budapest to meet Zina who it looks like will be coordinating his future work in season 2. She gave him a new target: Timothy Winthorp, as she knew that he doesn't like an unpaid debt, and Winthorp never paid up for UGC.
Though he doesn't say no to the new target, he doesn't exactly agree either, as his sights are firmly set on finding his wife and son before he puts the Jackal mask back on.
