Oscar De La Hoya lays out one condition Devin Haney must fulfil to land Ryan Garcia rematch and urges boxer to fire father

Oscar De La Hoya has urged Devin Haney to cut ties with his father Bill Haney ahead of his proposed rematch with Ryan Garcia. The fierce rivals are set to compete in separate bouts in May as part of a Ring Magazine card, that will mark both fighter’s first outings since their controversial inaugural encounter. De La Hoya thinks Haney Sr has ruined his son’s careerGETTY Last April, Garcia dropped Haney three times en route to an initial majority decision loss, which was later overturned to a no contest when it was found Garcia had tested positive for the banned substance ostarine. He was subsequently banned from boxing for one year by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) while Haney filed a lawsuit against Garcia and De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions alleging battery, fraud and breach of contract. Providing Garcia gets through Rolly Romero and Haney overcomes Jose Ramirez in their respective next fights then a rematch is being targeted for October in Saudi Arabia. However, De La Hoya insists the sequel won’t happen until Haney drops his lawsuit. Speaking during the most recent segment of his popular Clapback Thursdays video series, De La Hoya opened up by tearing into Haney’s dad and manager before laying out Golden Boy’s demands. “I feel sorry for Devin Haney because you hardly ever hear him speak because his dad does all the talking,” said De La Hoya. “Sure, Devin had a bad loss this year, but it shouldn’t have been career-ending. It could have been easily fixed. “If it wasn’t for his father and manager, Bill, who single-handedly turned it into a more toxic situation than Chornobyl. “I have never seen a big f*** up for a boxer’s career in my life. “All Devin had to do after losing to Ryan Garcia last April was say, ‘He beat me. I couldn’t block his left hook,’ and then get back in the gym. Garcia floored Haney three times and beat him, but the fight was made a no-contest due to his positive drugs testsGetty “Instead of focusing on a comeback fight in 2024 and teaching his son to block the left hook, Bill thought it was a better idea to have Devin sue Ryan for battery and emotional distress, to sue Golden Boy, to sue the New York Athletic Commission to get Devin’s loss expunged from his record, to fight a civilian at the Orange Country State Fair, to take the rest of the year off and to make as many enemies as possible. “They’ve cemented their legacy as the biggest crybabies in the history of boxing. “Now, last week, Bill and Devin were in London, begging Turki for a payday because they have no other options. The only value Devin has in this sport is to fight Ryan Garcia again. So, Bill, being the pimp that he is, hoed his son out again to the fighter that beat his a** so badly he had to sue him for battery. I couldn’t make this s*** up, folks. “The rematch [Garcia-Haney] is to happen this October but under one condition. The Haney’s must drop their bull s**** lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy. “Of course, the Haney’s are willing to drop it because they had no case whatsoever. “I’ve never heard of a fighter suing another fighter for battery, and I’m certain we will never see it again unless Devin sues his next opponent.” Follow talkBOXING on social media talkBOXING is now on Twitter and Facebook.
