Mars is the next planet to retrograde on Dec. 6, an astrological event that intensifies the cosmos while only physically appearing to be a backward-moving illusion from our vantage point on Earth.

This is the case for all planetary retrogrades, however, though they still have mysterious — yet powerful — effects on our lives, especially depending on a person's zodiac sign and where the planet is retrograding on the astrology wheel. This retrograde will take place in Leo.

While the effects of a retrograde can be felt in the months surrounding its transit, celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas notes it will be "the most intense" when the planet appears to be moving backward in the sky. "The things that it rules tend to go awry, as well as whatever is ruled by the sign," he says.

Retrogrades also tend to cause us to "revisit the past," while "unresolved situations may re-present themselves for closure or begin anew," Thomas adds, highlighting the importance of "reviewing, revisiting and reflecting" during these cycles.

It's also important to note the themes that Mars rules: passion, courage, sex, desire, aggression, drive, competition and conflict. "All of these matters become weak and we must face how we’ve used and interacted with these energies in our lives up until this point in time," he says.

Although this Mars transit can make us feel "exhausted, burnt out and frustrated," Thomas notes that every retrograde carries its own "karmic lesson" depending on what the planet rules and where it falls in the sky. "This all ties to the natural energy of each individual and their unique birth charts."

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

The universe might have you confused, Aries. "You can expect to face major hurdles around romance, dating, fertility or children," predicts Thomas.

Regarding a relationship, he says you may find yourself "going at each" other or like the spark between you "has faded." If single and dating, he says a "dry spell" might be felt around this Mars retrograde.

Also, Thomas says "don't be surprised" if you "cross paths" with an ex or old flame.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Take your emotions into consideration around this Mars retrograde, Taurus! "You may feel like you’re consistently on edge, ready to combust or are overly sensitive," Thomas puts forth.

He notes that "headaches" may revolve around your family, home or domestic life. "Conflicts could be around every corner," he predicts, also revealing that "hurdles" could arise if you've been in the process of moving or renovating.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Choose your words carefully, Gemini! "Big challenges when it comes to your ideas and communications could be here," warns Thomas.

"Mars may create delays and frustrations around writing, speaking, advertising or intellectual endeavors," he puts forth, noting that this could "trigger some drama" with neighbors, siblings or close friends near this time.

Lastly, Thomas says to be aware of "hiccups" if you've been planning a trip. "Double check everything" he suggests.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Take your money matters seriously, Cancer. "Sudden rocky situations around finances could [arise]," Thomas predicts.

"You may be burning through cash faster than you’re making it," he says, warning against making any "major purchases" because you might end up "regretting" them. "You just aren’t seeing money clearly at this time," he puts forth.

Elsewhere in Thomas' prediction, he says you could experience some "delays" around expected checks and finances. Have patience.

Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22)

Brace yourself, Leo. Thomas warns this Mars retrograde might be "one of the rockiest and most karma-filled" you've ever experienced.

Why? He says it's taking place in your zodiac sign, which may cause various effects to be felt around the red planet's following themes: passion, war, sex and desire. "You may also feel tremendously exhausted across the board," he adds.

Thomas predicts challenges with "enemies, exes or people from the past" might also arise at this time, too. "Don’t let anger get the best of you... Just try to go with the flow!"

Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)

Don't fight the feeling, Virgo! "It appears projects that you've been working on in recent months are going to hit major delays, face hurdles at every turn or lose all momentum," Thomas predicts.

Regardless, he says this "isn't a time to give up hope!" Instead, he suggests you "use this as an opportunity to revise plans."

Also take into consideration your mental health at this time. "Your anxiety could be a bit spiked, so prioritize ways to build mindfulness and meditation."

Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)

Brace yourself for social circle drama, Libra. "It may now feel like everyone is at each other's throats," predicts Thomas.

Well that could be the case, he says this Mars retrograde energy could also "turn your attention" to the fact that your social life has "dried up entirely." Unrelated to friendships, he warns that you could also hit "road blocks" if you've been "actively working towards a significant goal or aspiration."

Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)

The universe might have you scratching your head about matters surrounding your career and ambitions, Scorpio. "You may experience many headaches around professional matters," Thomas predicts.

Job "conflicts" with "authority figures" or "public spotlight" may present themselves, he puts forth. You might also notice "roadblocks" or the "loss of momentum" around a major project that you were hoping to launch.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)

It’s likely that you’ve been feeling fried, Sagittarius. However, Thomas predicts "that’s about to change."

Problems may arise, he says, around the following themes: legal battles and negotiations, long-distance travel or international situations. He says "significant delays" or "rocky news" might also present themselves if you're currently involved in "academics, publishing or the media."

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)

Mind your money, Capricorn! "The upcoming Mars retrograde could cause challenges or losses around assets, investments or other large money matters," Thomas says.

"Do not make major purchases at this time," he advises, also noting that "delays" may take place if you've been waiting on a "negotiation, settlement or inheritance."

Aquarius (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)

You might be in for it, Aquarius. "This could be one of the most challenging Mars retrograde cycles you’ve experienced in quite some time," Thomas warns.

"Prepare for big challenges with partners, either in your personal or professional life. You could’ve been hard at work making plans together and now things are slowing down," he puts forth.

"You could also feel tension between the two of you instead," Thomas continues. "Don’t charge into a battle because it may feel like you’re facing enemies at every turn."

Pisces (Feb. 19 to March 20)

Take a minute, Pisces! "Prepare for problems with work and productivity," Thomas says.

"You may feel like you’re drowning beneath responsibilities and routines or that suddenly everything is spiraling off the rails and nothing is happening at all," he predicts. "Conflicts with clients, staff or coworkers may even pop up."

It's important to take your health into consideration. "You could be feeling burnt out and have weaker immunity," says Thomas, though optimistically notes you could "reconnect" with a past employer or client at this time, too.
