Welcome to The Blueprint, where we break down the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and build them back up, piece by piece.

It really is cold outside, but Kate Hudson came prepared.

The Bride Wars actress got a taste of winter earlier this week, so naturally, she bundled up accordingly. She started with a chunky turtleneck sweater, a celebrity-worn style that took off last fall, and a pair of flare jeans for her outfit base. Then, she layered up with a captivating fluffy coat on top as an alternative to puffers and parkas — and my personal favorite for holiday gatherings.

She also carried a crossbody bag, which I can assume is because the straps of a shoulder bag or roomy carryall wouldn’t fit well over her thick coat. (I grew up in Chicago weather, so I learned this the hard way.)

My parents were right: Whenever I don’t cover up my neck on a frigid day, I usually get sick. Scarves annoy me more than help me, so turtlenecks are the move. This one is nice and long in the back and isn’t tight like a thermal layer. It also has a “high-end feel,” according to one shopper

Whenever my outfits aren’t hitting the way I want them to, I throw on a faux fur coat.

Last Christmas is a prime example: I had on a pair of black trousers and a gray sweater, but something just wasn’t clicking. I threw on a red shearling coat similar to Taylor Swift’s, and it pulled the look together.

I don’t need to own this coat (though I want it) to know that it would do the same. It looks as cozy as my fuzzy nighttime robe and has elegant details that a puffer doesn’t — lapels and buttons, namely. I also like this one from Revolve, which isn’t shearling but has a smoother faux fur fabric like Hudson’s.

The Levi’s jeans I currently own have been good to me, so I’d love to get a new pair from the brand. The flares at the bottom of these are more understated and look more modern because of it. They also have over 1,000 positive ratings, and the silhouette is one that Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Reese Witherspoon have worn recently. In other words, shoppers and celebrities have a positive outlook on flared denim.

Crossbody bags are also creeping up everywhere — so this Kate Spade purse is high up on my wish list. It comes in four colors, though the black and sparkly green options are the two I can’t decide between, and it’s more budget-friendly than some of my other handbags, even though this one is a designer bag.
