‘I might buy two’ – Conor McGregor reveals interest in buying football clubs as one releases statement on UFC star
Conor McGregor has revealed he is interested in purchasing TWO football clubs. McGregor shared photos on Instagram this week, congratulating his cousin Warren Davis on winning the FAI Cup with Drogheda United. McGregor said he ‘might buy two’ football clubsGetty Drogheda won the cup in November, beating Derry City 2-0 in the final at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and Davis was on the bench. It was the first major trophy for the side from the east coast of Ireland, north of Dublin, since they won the League of Ireland in 2007 and only the second time in their history they have won the cup. Shortly after congratulating his cousin, McGregor took to X and revealed his interest in buying two clubs from Ireland in a now-deleted social media post. “How much is it to buy a League of Ireland team?” McGregor wrote, with more images of him posing with the trophy. “I might buy two.” Drogheda have since responded to the viral posts, distancing themselves from the former UFC champion. “A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup,” the statement on the club’s official website read. “Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals. “Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.” This follows comments from Errol Musk, father of the world’s richest man Elon Musk, who said his son would like to purchase Liverpool Football Club. McGregor celebrated his cousins FAI Cup victory on Instagramthenotoriousmma Speaking to Kait Borsay on Times Radio, Musk said his son would be interested in buying the Anfield club because the family has links to the city and knew ‘quite a few of the Beatles’. “Does your son want to buy Liverpool Football Club?” Borsay asked. “I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price. I can’t comment on that,” Errol jokingly replied. Borsay is a Liverpool fan so pressed him further on the issue, as it ‘means a lot’ to her and other supporters. “Has he expressed a desire to buy Liverpool Football Club?” she added. “Oh yes, oh yes – but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it, you know,” Errol said. Musk has his sights set on the Premier League, according to his fatherGetty “He would like to, yes. Obviously. Anyone would want to. So would I.” McGregor, 36, has remained the centre of attention in the combat sports world since announcing a fight with YouTuber-turned-WWE superstar Logan Paul. However, with Paul announcing that he is ‘100 per cent committed’ to WWE during their Netflix debut on Monday, reports have suggested the Irishman is on the hunt for a new opponent. McGregor hasn’t fought in his primary sport, MMA, since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021. YouTuber and musician KSI has since announced that he would ‘very down’ to step in and replace his business partner Paul to fight with McGregor. KSI was a pioneer of influencer boxing and founded crossover promotion Misfits boxing. He has appeared in the ring several times, most recently losing to the half-brother of Tyson Fury, Tommy Fury, via unanimous decision in October 2023.
