‘Tough and elite’ – Andy Reid shaped Patrick Mahomes and could eclipse iconic Bill Belichick with historic Super Bowl feat
Andy Reid is leading the way again as the Kansas City Chiefs chase an historic Super Bowl three-peat. With a regular-season record of 15-2, they once again enter the postseason as favorites to lift the Lombardi Trophy for an unprecedented third successive time. Reid and the Chiefs are chasing three consecutive Super Bowl winsGetty A 23-14 win against the Houston Texans in the divisional round has set up an AFC Championship repeat against the Buffalo Bills, and should they knock off Josh Allen and co, the Chiefs will have a chance to make their history. Super Bowl LIX will take place on February 9 at the Caesers Superdome in New Orleans and the Chiefs will hope to be one step closer on Sunday night. No team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls – but a trio have come close. The Miami Dolphins appeared in back-to-back-to-back games from 1971 through 1973 winning the last two only to fall short of a fourth when they lost in the divisional round. The Bills did make four in succession, from 1990 through 1993, but remarkably won none of them to leave the franchise still in search of a first ever Lombardi. The last team to advance to three consecutive Super Bowls was Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, making the game from 2016 through 2018. Belichick was the architect of that dynasty, dominating the NFL alongside quarterback Brady. And while they only managed to win in two of their three consecutive Super Bowls, the pair did secure a record six rings during their time together in Foxborough. Belichick also departed New England as the second-most winningest coach in NFL history, 14 wins behind Don Shula, cementing his status as the greatest coach of all time. Many believed that the kind of success he and the Pats achieved would not be matched for quite some time, but then came Reid and the Chiefs.
‘Big Red’ is fourth on the winningest list but only has three Super Bowls to his name as a head coach, however there is belief that Belichick’s record of six is not out of sight.
In Patrick Mahomes, Reid has a 29-year-old quarterback that can continue to dominate the league for years to come, and with the team he has built in Kansas City, this is surely not the last time we’ll see them in the playoffs.
The Chiefs have reached the AFC Championship game in all seven of Mahomes seasons as the starter, and have reached four Super Bowls in that time.
It is Reid’s 33-year NFL career, which included a six-year spell as an assistant with the Green Bay Packers before a head coach role with the Philadelphia Eagles, that has helped shape his current team into a dynasty that has already won the AFC West nine-straight times.

Speaking ahead of Championship Weekend, Bell pointed out a difference in Belichick and Reid’s coaching styles, and drew on his own experience as a player to explain what makes ‘Big Red’ so special.
“All coaches (have a different style) that’s unique to their personality,” he continued.
“If you are not yourself, we as players will not identify and follow you.
“Reid allows players to be themselves, but he’s tough. He demands respect, people rally behind him and his formula works. It’s been amazing how he has adapted to the younger generation.
“We as players understand that you’re giving us the ability to be ourselves, so we have have to represent you in kind. We’ve got to have your back.
“When you say, ‘Enough is enough, and now I need you to do this,’ it’s time to do that and turn it on, because you have allowed us to have the space we need to be ourselves – you’ve got to rally behind a coach like that.”
While Belichick had a reputation for tough discipline, with preparation and relentless attention to detail at the core of his philosophy, open dialogue and effective communication are at the heart of Reid’s coaching philosophy, fostering a culture of collaboration and trust with his players.
The pair might have had differing styles, but the on-field results speak for themselves.
And if Reid is to lead his Chiefs to a Super Bowl three-peat, he will have achieved an NFL first and at the very least cement himself alongside Belichick, if not above him.
