‘Embarrassed myself’ – Coco Gauff reveals too much discussing bold Australian Open wardrobe choice

It was about to be a perfect day for Coco Gauff. The American won her third round Australian Open match but might have ruined her night a little after an awkward post-match interview. Coco Gauff admitted she embarrassed herself during her on-court interview For the third year in a row, Gauff is into the fourth round in Melbourne. The World no.3 improved to an 8-0 record in 2025, the third-time she has done this, following her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.  The 20-year-old is now into the second week of a Grand Slam for the 14th time in her career and joins Iga Swiatek as the only players to reach the second week down under three times in a row before turning 21. Gauff’s 8-0 start in three consecutive years makes her just the fifth player in the Open Era to achieve the feat. She joins Margaret Court (1969-73), Stefanie Graf (1987-90 and 1994-96), Monica Seles (1991-93) and Serena Williams (2003-05). The third seed has also now beaten Fernandez two times in 2025, after defeating the Canadian at the United Cup earlier this year, a tournament Gauff would go on to win with Team USA. Remarkably, that was the pair’s first meeting since their junior days and the American has never dropped a set to the Canadian both as kids and now adults.  “[It’s] harder because she knows what to expect, and I definitely think she played a little bit differently,” she said in her on-court interview.  “You’re trying to change up what you did last time because she’s expecting it.” Gauff is looking strong as he chases a second Grand Slam title The night was not to end without a bit of embarrassment for Gauff, as was asked about her outfit following the match and maybe revealed a bit too much. “This is one of the best tennis outfits ever. Is it comfortable”, the interviewer asked Gauff. The 2023 US Open champion replied: “A lot of people were wondering how I use the bathroom in it… so I posted a video on IG. Not actually demonstrating but you get the idea.” Once Gauff had realised what she just said, she quickly covered her face as the crowd bursted into laughter.  “Definitely embarrassed myself with my on court interview today…”, she wrote on X a short time later. Coco Gauff on X following her interview Gauff’s win sees her set up a match with Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic, who advanced following a retirement over Naomi Osaka.  The pair are spilt in their two previous matches with Bencic winning the 2021 Adelaide semi-finals before Gauff took revenge in the 2023 Washington quarterfinals.
