Borussia Dortmund have plenty to be happy about since the November international break.

They resumed their season the weekend before last with a 4-0 thumping of Freiburg. Nuri Sahin’s side then drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich last time out.

They did not quite manage to beat the Bundesliga leaders. Dortmund led 1-0 until the closing stages, when Jamal Musiala struck an equaliser for Bayern.

Even so, BVB’s performance will have given them a boost. They turned in an accomplished display against Bayern, even though the latter created the better chances across the 90 minutes.

Dortmund are now fifth in the table. A title tilt will almost certainly be beyond them, but they are just a point outside the top four.

However, there is still one big question mark hanging over this team: their record away from home.

Dortmund’s last two games were both at Signal Iduna Park, where they have performed well since the start of the season. Sahin’s men have collected 19 points from a possible 21 in front of their own fans, five more than anyone else in Germany’s top flight. They also beat Celtic and Sturm Graz on familiar territory in the Champions League.

It has been a different story at opposition grounds, though. Only Bochum have collected fewer points on the road than Dortmund, whose away results read: played five, won none, drawn one, lost four.

Unless BVB can start picking up points on their travels, they will not achieve their objectives this term. You cannot rely exclusively on your home form if you want to qualify for the Champions League. Sahin, who played 274 games for Dortmund, knows that as well as anyone.

Racking up a couple of away wins before the winter break, which begins after the Bundesliga matches on December 22, would be invaluable.

After this trip to Borussia Monchengladbach, Dortmund host Hoffenheim and then go to Wolfsburg, to whom they have already lost an away game in the DFB-Pokal.

There is finally a sense of momentum behind BVB after those showings against Freiburg and Bayern, but they could fritter it all away with a poor result at Borussia-Park. Even at this relatively early stage of the campaign, this is a big game for Dortmund.

Their confidence in away games is brittle and conceding the first goal would make it considerably harder for BVB to pick up their first win of the season at a ground other than Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Monchengladbach will be aware of that and Gerardo Seoane will therefore instruct his players to put their opponents under pressure early on.

Gladbach have scored six goals in their last three first halves at Borussia-Park, including two against St Pauli in their most recent home game.

Tim Kleindienst to score any time

Unsurprisingly, Harry Kane is at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts, but Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush is only one goal behind the England captain.

Marmoush is not the only forward in Germany who is outperforming expectations. Tim Kleindienst of Borussia Monchengladbach is another.

Kleindienst, who cost Gladbach just €7m over the summer, has scored eight goals in 12 Bundesliga appearances this term. He is on course to blow past his tally of 12 in the whole of 2023/24.

Kleindienst is a real handful and Borussia Dortmund’s defence will struggle to deal with his physicality both inside and outside the penalty area.
