Bill Murray Left Grammy Winner Laufey Feeling 'Confused' After He Gave Her a 'Powerful' Compliment at Age 17

Murray recently starred in the Icelandic-Chinese singer's "Santa Baby" music video

It's not hard to recognize Laufey's talent.

In a new interview with The Independent, the Grammy-winning jazz-pop singer, 25, recalled none other than Bill Murray giving her a compliment as a teenager — and leaving her a bit "confused."

The Icelandic-Chinese artist told the outlet Murray, 74, said she was a "powerful woman" during an interaction when she was 17 years old.

While Laufey appreciated the compliment, she said, "I remember also being confused."

"I hadn’t put out any music then," she added. "I was just a nerdy little classical cello student."

Laufey may still have been studying at age 17, but she'd already become a finalist on Iceland's Got Talent and a semi-finalist on The Voice Iceland at the time.

Since then, she's become a Berklee College of Music graduate and released two albums: 2022's Everything I Know About Love and 2023's Bewitched, which won best traditional pop vocal album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

In a full-circle moment, Murray recently made a cameo as the narrator in Laufey's "Santa Baby" music video, which dropped last month.

Directed by Jason Lester and choreographed by Alex Wong, the video features the Caddyshack star as a narrator, while Laufey lounges in a series of stunning holiday displays, flips off Santa and tells the head of the North Pole what she's looking for this year.

"Santa Baby" is the latest addition to A Very Laufey Holiday, the musician's Christmas EP, originally released in 2022.

“I’m so excited to continue adding to A Very Laufey Holiday with my version of the holiday classic, Santa Baby," she said of the video upon its release.

"It was so much fun creating this version, and the music video became the perfect visual representation of the track," added Laufey. "We were so lucky to have Bill Murray and Isabella Boylston of the American Ballet featured in the video for this fun and festive story.”
