Flawless on the red carpet, at home Amy Adams has gotten some new style pointers from a discerning audience.

In this week’s issue of PEOPLE, the Oscar-nominated actress shares that her 14-year-old daughter Aviana, who she shares with husband Darren Le Gallo, has gently suggested she improve her go-to mom uniform.

“I’m usually the least manicured at my household,” Adams, 50, says. "Usually there's a ponytail involved, maybe a hat."

But a few things are changing, after years of being "very dedicated to leggings and printed T-shirts," she laughs. "Lately, per my daughter’s request, I’m working on an upgrade. She’s like, ‘You can’t wear workout clothes if you’re not working out, Mom. You can’t just do the leisure part of athleisure.’ ”

Still, on the red carpet Adams has always been a style star.

While promoting her new movie Nightbitch (out now) this fall, Adams has showed off her dimensional style in looks ranging from chic suits to timeless gowns on the red carpet.

Aviana even joined her parents on the red carpet for Nightbitch at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. “It was really great to share that with her,” says the proud mom.

On the set of Nightbitch — a film that's “a realistic look at being an aging woman and a mother, and it’s a real warts-and-all approach,” says director Marielle Heller — Adams was steadfast in physically portraying the realities of motherhood in a way that would resonate with audiences.

“I didn’t even really want her to dye her hair. I think it’s what makes this movie so relatable is that Amy was willing to look like a real person and not like a Facetuned movie star,” says Heller.

Adams further committed to her role as Mother, who seemingly turns into an actual dog as a coping mechanism while grappling with the weight and isolation of new motherhood, by declining to use prop hair on her chin. Instead, she volunteered to grow out her own follicles.

“They were going to use prosthetic hair, and I was like, ‘I can do better than that,’ ” she tells PEOPLE.
