‘We’ll all test positive’ – Formula 1 stars joke about ban after $500 million Las Vegas Grand Prix ruined by drug illegal in UK

Formula 1 drivers are set to get together to discuss the smell of marijuana that has been wreaking havoc at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. F1 is back on the famous Sin City strip this weekend but the ‘incredible amount’ of weed smoke is rampant in the Nevada desert. Perez claimed he was tired of the weed smell around the Vegas circuitGetty Motorsport’s elite invested heavily to end their 24-year absence from the world’s ‘Entertainment Capital’ last season. F1 owners Liberty Media purchased the land for $240million and then forked out a similar amount in construction costs totalling nearly half a billion dollars for a Grand Prix in Las Vegas. As part of being in Vegas, F1 chiefs wanted the event to be held during the city’s primetime so that the famous skyline would be lit up. However, an unexpected consequence for organisers has been the persistent marijuana smell distracting drivers racing down the strip. Speaking after his second free practice session, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez said: “What is very noticeable around the circuit is the smell of marijuana throughout the night. “I’m a bit tired of it already — the amount is incredible. It’s something all the drivers will definitely talk about.” Unlike the UK, cannabis is legal for both medical and recreational use in the state of Nevada. Fans attending the race are banned from bringing drugs to the 3.8-mile circuit, but it seems that’s not been enough to clear the air. Williams driver Franco Colapinto joked that inhaling the fumes could cause an epidemic on the grid: “Yes, there was a smell of weed. “If they dope the drivers now, I think we’ll all test positive, I swear – when we all test positive, there will be a mess.” Perez was among the F1 stars to voice their concern over the weed smellDAZN Checo: "Lo que sí se nota muchísimo alrededor de todo el circuito es el olor a marihuana durante toda la noche. Ya estoy un poco cansado, es increíble la cantidad. Es algo que seguro todos los pilotos hablarán de eso.” [ESPN] #LasVegasGP pic.twitter.com/4aMWwx92jc— checo news (@scheconews) November 22, 2024 “Había olor a porro, si nos haces el doping ahora damos todo positivo”Colapinto en Las Vegas pic.twitter.com/ddieho4azA— Marian Herrera (@marianherrrera) November 22, 2024 As expected, cannabis is a prohibited substance for F1 drivers as part of the FIA Anti-Doping Regulations from the sport’s governing body. While fans attending the Grand Prix will be following suit, Jade – a cannabis dispensary – is situated mere minutes from the racetrack. The shop even specifically markets itself to F1, with a statement on their website reading: “For the Las Vegas Formula 1 event attendees, the experience can be elevated with cannabis.” Rival chains last year also capitalised on F1’s arrival by offering discounted weed to locals affected by road closures and heavy noise. On track, Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton seemed to be unperturbed by Vegas’ scent as he topped both Friday’s practice sessions. The seven-time world champion took full advantage of his Silver Arrows car performing well in the cool Nevada conditions. The wintery conditions for the night race have carried a bad smellGetty 24-hour dispensaries are open near the Vegas street trackGetty “That’s the first time that I’ve actually had a day like that I think this year,” said Hamilton. “The car was feeling really good in P1, in P2 less so. So we’ve got some work to do overnight. “It’s difficult to know exactly where we are or why we are where we are, but really enjoying driving the track and we’ll see whether the car is still the same tomorrow. “I’m feeling good in myself. Like I said coming into this weekend, I know it’s not my driving. I’ve just got to work hard overnight not to make big changes. And hopefully get some good rest tonight and come back strong tomorrow.” Lando Norris was only 0.011 seconds behind Hamilton in FP2, as he seeks to keep his slim title hopes alive. Reigning three-time champion Max Verstappen can wrap up a fourth successive trophy with another victory on a track he won last year. However, the Dutchman found himself down in 17th after a difficult day for Red Bull, with his teammate Perez sitting two spots below.
