Taking place on Sat, Mar 22, from 11.15am, this annual spring fair, organized by the Embassy of India, has become a joyful celebration of Indian culture, bringing together a lively mix of music, dance, food, and artisanal crafts. Now in its third edition, the event has grown in scale and enthusiasm each year, offering new experiences to both long-time admirers of Indian traditions and those discovering them for the first time. To give us a closer look at what's in store for Vasant Mela 2025, we spoke with Neethu Rajan, director of the Indian Cultural Centre, about the festival's evolution, exciting new highlights, and why this year's event promises to be the most unforgettable yet. Firstly, for those who may be unfamiliar, can you give us a brief introduction to what Vasant Mela is?Vasant Mela is our super fun spring fair where we celebrate Indian culture and welcome the new season with open arms. Think of it as a big, colorful party organized by the Embassy of India here in Beijing. It's a day full of music, dance, food, art, and smiles – open to everyone who wants to join in the festivities. How has the event evolved since it was first held in 2023, and what new experiences can attendees expect this year?Since our very first edition in 2023, Vasant Mela has truly taken off. Last year alone, we welcomed over 4,000 visitors in person, with many more joining us online. This year, we're raising the bar even higher! We've expanded our event space, added more stalls, and broadened our food offerings. We also have an exciting line-up of new cultural performances and interactive activities for everyone to enjoy.  Food is always a highlight at the Vasant Mela. Could you tell us about some of the standout dishes or regional specialties that will be featured at the food stalls? The food is definitely one of the biggest highlights! This year, the food on offer promises to take you on a culinary journey across India, ranging from spicy street food to hearty home-style meals. We are sure you'll find something new and delicious to fall in love with. There is also a big focus on Indian handicrafts and art at this year's festival. Can you describe some of the unique items and artists that will be showcased?Absolutely! Our handicraft stalls are like little treasure boxes. You can find everything from colorful textiles to delicate jewelry and vibrant art pieces. These crafts represent different parts of India. It's a wonderful way to take a piece of India home with you. Cultural performances are another key part of the festival. What kind of performances can attendees look forward to this year?We have prepared a vibrant schedule of performances that will keep you entertained all day. Expect a mix of classical dances like Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Manipuri dance and Kathak, as well as energetic movie songs and folk dances. One of the standout moments this year will be our interactive Bhangra and Garba sessions — folk dances from Punjab and Gujarat — where attendees can jump in and learn a few steps themselves. I'm confident that each performance will create wonderful memories for everyone. What role do yoga and Ayurveda play in the festival? How can attendees engage with these wellness practices during the event?Wellness has always been a key part of Vasant Mela. We are hosting dedicated yoga sessions where both beginners and seasoned practitioners can learn and practice together under the guidance of experienced Yoga gurus. We'll also feature Ayurveda stalls, offering a glimpse into India's holistic approach to health through natural remedies and ancient wisdom. If you're already familiar with yoga, don't miss our friendly yoga contest, judged by a panel of experts.  For people new to Indian culture, what would you recommend as a must-see experience at the Vasant Mela?If you're new to Indian culture, I'd say don't miss the cultural stage. It's a one-stop show where you can enjoy everything — from soulful classical performances to fun dance moves and even a yoga challenge! Feel free to choose bright, bold colors and mix up traditional pieces with your own style. We even have a "best dressed" award and some cool gifts lined up for those who really embrace the look. So, dig out your favorite saree, kurta, or even a fun Indian accessory, and join the celebration in style.
