UFC heavyweight who lost to Tom Aspinall and sparred Eddie Hall could set record in 49th MMA bout at UFC 310

Alexander Volkov could set a very impressive record at UFC 310 this weekend. Volkov is the No.3 ranked UFC heavyweight and competes in his 49th MMA bout against Ciryl Gane on Saturday. Volkov [right] busted up Sergei Pavlovich in his last bout The 36-year-old is part of a Las Vegas main event card headlined by flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, who defends his belt against UFC debutant Kai Asakura. He is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Sergei Pavlovich in June, while his French counterpart Gane finished Serghei Spivac in his last bout. Gane fought Jon Jones in March 2023 at UFC 285 in the latter’s return to MMA, but was submitted in the very first round after only two minutes. Ireland’s Ian Garry takes on Shavkat Rakhmonov in a top welterweight contender bout in the co-main at UFC 310, with the winner set to face Belal Muhammad for the title. UFC 310’s prelims are just as stacked, with two former Jones rivals in Dominick Reyes and Anthony Smith battling it out in the octagon. As well as this, former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling faces Russia’s undefeated Movsar Evloev, while another ex-title holder in Chris Weidman faces Eryk Anders. The prelims feature so many exciting bouts that former middleweight champion Michael Bisping, who is now a UFC pundit, said it could be the company’s ‘best-ever’ set of early bouts. Volkov has only lost one of his last six fights in the UFC. And that defeat came to current interim champion Tom Aspinall, who is hopeful of fighting Jones for the heavyweight belt in his next fight. After his defeat to Aspinall, Volkov went on a four-fight win streak, and the Russian could better this at UFC 310 to set a new heavyweight division record. Aspinall beat Volkov in the first round for a career best win Should the Russian native beat former heavyweight title challenger Gane this weekend, Volkov will hold the longest winning streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division. He is currently tied with 28-year-old Mick Parkin, who emerged through Dana White’s Contender Series and is 10-0, for the longest active streak in the division. Parkin finished Lukasz Brzeski in his last fight on the same Manchester card that Muhammad beat Leon Edwards to win UFC gold for the first time. Footage emerged in May of Volkov sparring with former World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall, who was venturing into MMA for the first time in his career. After their training session, Hall said:  “Thank f*** for that. Jesus! F*** me! I’m gassed.  “He just smothered me. It’s like keeping that pressure on me all the time. At no point could I take a breath – he was just on me all the time.” Volkov is one of the UFC’s most experienced fighters, having made 48 walks to the octagon during his 15-year pro MMA career. 38 of his victories have come by way of knockout, and he has only gone the distance 10 times in his career. The Russian has already met Gane in the octagon before. They went toe-to-toe in a five-round main event in June 2021 as the latter came out victorious by unanimous decision. Their bout at UFC 310 is the standard three-rounds, so it wouldn’t be shocking to predict one of these men to be knocked out.
