Trump named Time’s 2024 Person of the Year

The US president-elect “has remade American politics,” according to the magazine

Time magazine has named Donald Trump Person of the Year. The decision comes after his successful bid to return to the White House and become the 47th US President.

“Since he began running for President in 2015, perhaps no single individual has played a larger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” Time wrote. “In many years, that choice is a difficult one. In 2024, it was not.”

Other candidates on Time’s shortlist included US Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, among others.

Time Magazine has run its Person of the Year feature since 1927, originally called “Man of the Year.” The accolade recognizes individuals or groups who have had a significant influence on the events of the year, whether positively or negatively. Over the decades, the selection has included political leaders, innovators, and cultural figures.

Trump has been featured on the cover of Time magazine three times this year. Although he first appeared on the magazine’s cover in 1989, he has often criticized it, once calling the 100 Most Influential People list a “joke and stunt.”

In 2015, after German Chancellor Angela Merkel received the Person of the Year title, Trump tweeted, “I told you TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite. They picked a person who is ruining Germany.” However, when he was named Person of the Year in 2016, he called it “a tremendous honor” in an interview with NBC News.
