Travis Kelce’s status under threat as rookie rival emerges to take top spot in NFL popularity stakes
Travis Kelce’s fame away from the field has exploded in 2024. His relationship with Taylor Swift won him an army of fans – and massively boosted the NFL’s ratings. Kelce’s numbers are down and fans have taken noteGetty The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has capitalized on the popularity as he forges ahead with his acting side hustle. In addition, Amazon paid Travis and brother Jason $100million to snap up their New Heights Podcast – a fitting name given their success. Mom Donna is even turning into a celebrity in her own right. But it is on the field where Kelce made his name – and his status is slipping. Once considered the best tight end in the NFL, the Chiefs star’s stats have not been what fans come to expect. Catching 75 of 101 targets for 637 yards and two touchdowns is not bad at all for his position. But given the lofty heights Kelce usually performs at, it is quite a drop off. NFL fans have taken notice and the first week of Pro Bowl Games voting has highlighted how far the 35-year-old’s stock has fallen. The last time the nine-time participant didn’t get a nod was 2014 but he is behind a rookie in the AFC poll. Las Vegas Raiders sensation Brock Bowers, who leads all tight ends in catches and yards, is currently ahead. George Kittle tops the NFC standings thanks to his eight touchdown grabs despite the San Francisco 49ers’ struggles. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also enduring a down year. He isn’t in the top five vote-getters so far even with his team sitting pretty at 11-1. Lamar Jackson is out in front with Baltimore Ravens teammate Derrick Henry second. Quarterbacks may get all the love in MVP races but Saquon Barkley and Jahmyr Gibbs’ presence alongside Henry in the top five shows running backs are getting recognition from fans. The Chiefs are third in the standings for team votes so far – behind the Ravens and Detroit Lions. Full-back Carson Steele, left guard Joe Thuney, center Creed Humphrey, and long-snapper James Winchester all lead the AFC in nods. Rookie Steele is listed at full-back despite being deployed as a running back this season. Winchester is seeking a first-ever Pro Bowl selection at 35, while Thuney and Humphrey are mainstays of the offensive line. The Pro Bowl Games are being held in Orlando for a second-straight season in 2025. talkSPORT is your home of the NFL on UK radio, join us from 6pm on Sunday for the Atlanta Falcons visit to the Minnesota Vikings with coverage on talkSPORT2 Catch up with the latest from around the league via our dedicated NFL YouTube channel – including our weekly Rundown show
