‘Time is limited’ – Anthony Joshua sets deadline for Tyson Fury fight as he drops retirement hint
Anthony Joshua insists his long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury ‘has to happen’ in 2025. British boxing fans have been clambering to see the heavyweight titans collide for the best part of five years. Joshua wants to fight Fury in 2025 after falling to defeat against DuboisMark Robinson/Matchroom The closest the pair ever came to fighting each other was back in 2021 when both men were at the peak of their powers and held all four major heavyweight titles between them. In May of that year, Fury and Joshua signed their sides of the deal and an announcement was made that the fight would take place on August 14, 2021. However, a judge in a US court ruled that Deontay Wilder was entitled to exercise his option for a third fight with Fury, putting an end to the agreement. The situation was then further complicated by Joshua losing to Oleksandr Usyk in back-to-back fights in 2021 and 2022. But the Ukrainian slickster has since beaten Fury twice as well, leaving the Brits on a collision course to face each other once again. “I’ve been involved in a whole lot of fights, but this has to happen in 2025,” Joshua told Sportboom of an all-British showdown with Fury during a visit to Nigeria this week. “Of course, it has to happen and, hopefully, it does happen… “Time is limited. So, I just want to put in more work. “Time is of the essence. In 2024, when I look back, I believe I could have done more, and I have another chance in 2025 to do more. “I’m going to make sure that I take every opportunity that comes my way. I’m going to go again. Fury is on the same path as Joshua after losing back-to-back fights against UsykGetty “Ups and downs, they happen. To some people, it is always up. “My life is up and down, so I have got to get used to the turbulent times and keep riding the wave. “I can’t stop now; I have to keep going until I reach my destination.” Joshua’s recent comments suggest he is aware that his career is entering its final stretch. The 35-year-old was brutally knocked out by Daniel Dubois in September and is now facing the very real possibility that his next fight could be his last. Following his defeats to Usyk, Joshua took time to rebuild with a handful of tune-up fights against fringe-level fighters. This time, however, Father Time is unlikely to afford him the same luxury.
