The Birds jumped out to an early lead that they never relinquished. The numerous cutaways to Brady and partner Kevin Burkhardt showed the former quarterback in a mystifying getup. For the most part, Brady looked as though he’d raided Don Draper’s closet, nailing all the elements of a suit this magazine would have recommended in 2011: there was a pocket square neatly tucked into his breast pocket and a tie bar on his tie. But all that subdued elegance wound up clashing with his choice in wristwear—a watch so gilded and over-the-top it would’ve made Cleopatra blush.Michael Owens/Getty ImagesThe watch in question is a $740,000 Jacob & Co. As the name promises, and as your eyes have surely worked out, there are a few yellow sapphires involved in the making of this watch—371 of them, to be exact, across the case, dial, and crown. Every time the cameras flipped to the booth during the game, Brady’s watch was impossible to ignore. He seemed to wear it as a reminder that even though he wasn’t out there on the field anymore, he is still that guy—undeniably the greatest to ever play the sport. It’s striking that he waited to wear this watch until the Super Bowl. Rather than fade into the fabric of the game, the Caviar Tourbillon went viral the moment it appeared onscreen and became as memorable as any play on the field on Sunday. The Solar Zodiac depicts planets cut from precious gemstones: Neptune is made out of lapis lazuli, for instance, while Mercury is represented by white granite. The whole watch even rotates counterclockwise, the way most planetary bodies in our solar system travel around the sun. Straham’s Daytona might not boast the 371 diamonds of Brady’s watch, but it’s hard to argue the former defensive lineman’s piece doesn’t find a better equilibrium between outrageous luxury and sporty wearability.Serena Williams’ Audemars Piguet Code 11:59 Tourbillon OpenworkedEmilee Chinn/Getty ImagesWhen your Super Bowl halftime wardrobe calls for blue, there is no better watch company to have on speed-dial than Audemars Piguet. Over the past couple of years, the brand has worked magic with blue ceramic, turning out a version of its Royal Oak fit for Papa Smurf. Williams opted for AP’s still relatively young Code 11:59 collection, which combines white gold with that aforementioned blue ceramic. AP has built an empire on luxury-sport watches—its Royal Oak practically invented the category when it debuted in 1972. However, it’s a brew they haven’t replicated as successfully with the Code 11:59 line. This watch is an exception, however. A Super Bowl MVP trophy, a cameo on Abbott Elementary, and the most handsome mug in the NFL. Doesn’t Jalen Hurts have enough? Apparently not, because he arrived at the Super Bowl in one of Patek’s nicest Nautiluses. The Nautilus ranks among the watchmaker’s most recognizable pillars, but lately hardcore collectors have flocked to the more understated references, like the famed 5711. Hurts went in the opposite direction with this 5712R, which has three different complications on the dial to represent the power reserve, moonphase, and small seconds (which displays the seconds via a subregister rather than a third hand).
