Addressing Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist, Shebahn Aherne said: “18-year-old Luke Litter, happy birthday young sir. Today’s the day. “He maybe won’t be having his first pint at 7.22 on a Tuesday morning but we’ve got two grown men here who might just want to ‘cheers’ together for young Luke Littler.” It was then that Aherne brought in a tray of pints to share with her fellow talkSPORT hosts, much to their surprise. Ally McCoist replied: “I’m doing dry January!” Clearly unimpressed, Stelling said: “If you could see the head on this you’d be doing dry January, February, March and April,” to which McCoist replied: “Can I get a spoon with mine?” “Anyway, happy birthday Luke!” Reflecting on how Littler’s 18th birthday might differ from his, 69-year-old Stelling said: “My 18th was in the pub. It was 1973 and you could go to the pub and get four pints and a packet of crisps for 50p. “You’d go to the pub because remember, there was no internet, no mobile phones, you didn’t have a PC, there was no streaming, you had three TV channels and in 1973 there were powercuts going on and the TV went off at 10.30 in the evening and there was practically no live football – just the occasional international shown or a cup game but top division games, they weren’t live. You weren’t getting paid for it anywhere!” For an 18-year-old, Littler isn’t doing too badly. After bursting onto the scene at last year’s World Darts Championships where he finished as runner-up, Littler went on to win three major titles in the Premier League, World Series Of Darts and the Grand Slam Of Darts. His 2025 got off to the best-possible start by winning the World Darts Championship at Ally Pally, bumping him up to second place in the PDC Order Of Merit. While he was dumped out of the Bahrain Masters in the quarter-finals, another year like last year could see him pip Luke Humphries to become the number one star in darts.
