talkSPORT betting tips – Best bets and expert advice for Friday at Sandown

The Grade 1 Tingle Creek takes place at Sandown on Saturday and it’s one of the calendar’s best races outside of the Cheltenham Festival. Before that Friday’s card provides some excellent action before that however and it’s something to look forward to. It’s a six-race card and a couple of Grade 2 novice events are the pick of the bunch, with the going currently described as soft on the hurdles course and good to soft on the chase track. Our expert has three strong selections to follow across the card, with one in each of the two main events and one in the competitive-looking three-mile handicap chase. Every runner has some sort of chance, but Paul Nicholls’ Quebecois could be a class above the rest here. This big and scopey sort will definitely not be seen to best effect until he goes over fences, but his impressive success at Chepstow on hurdling debut suggests he’s well up to competing in this grade over the smaller obstacles. The yard’s horses were running pretty poorly first-time out, but this son of No Risk At All bucked the trend in good style. Harry Cobden didn’t mess around and he employed very positive tactics, making all the running. There was plenty left in the tank at the end of the race as well, despite the fact that he was keen enough in the early stages. Quebecois certainly didn’t look like the finished article and he’s likely to progress with experience. A good winner of a bumper at Exeter last term, he was deemed good enough to run in the Champion Bumper, although he failed to fire that day. This could be Nicholls’ best novice hurdler this term and he can win this before a potential stab at the Challow Hurdle at Newbury later this month. 2.33 Sandown – Handstands Ben Pauling looks set to be a trainer to follow this season and he has some excellent prospects in the novice chasing department. Among them is Handstands, who was a Listed winner over hurdles last season and retains loads of potential over fences. Connections went to £135,000 to pick up this horse after he won an Irish point at Moira in October 2023. It must have immediately looked like money well spent as he won his first three starts over hurdles. The last of those was a Listed race at Huntingdon, where he had a Grade 1 winner behind him in second and the other beaten horses are also useful sorts. It was a below-par performance when sixth behind Ballyburn at the Cheltenham Festival, but it’s easy to forgive that effort. Pauling’s five-year-old was a little underwhelming when falling on chase debut at WIncanton, but should improve for the run and can win here if putting his best foot forward. 3.03 Sandown – Hoe Joly Smoke Point-to-point winner Hoe Joly Smoke remains lightly raced and hopefully unexposed, especially in handicap company. Dan Skelton’s gelding is yet to get off the mark, but it shouldn’t be very long before that happens. This son of Black Sam Bellamy ran a decent race at Uttoxeter on chase and seasonal debut in October when finishing second to Resplendent Grey. That rival runs in the Grade 2 novice chase on this card, which gives you an idea of how well regarded he is. Hoe Joly Smoke is entitled to improve for that run as it was his first for 322 days and this looks like a good opportunity to get the ball rolling.
