talkSPORT betting tips – Australian Open outright predictions and tips
The first Grand Slam of the 2025 season is almost upon us as tennis’ elite head to Melbourne Park to contest the Australian Open, where the cream has a tendency to rise to the top. Jannik Sinner claimed his maiden Grand Slam title Down Under last season, with the Italian world number one following up in the US equivalent in September to show that there was no fluke surrounding his breakthrough Major. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka was crowned women’s champion in Australia by successfully defending the title she won in 2023 and it is that pair that spearheads the outright betting again. The draws have yet to be done for the Australian Open, which gets underway for a fortnight on Sunday 12th January, but Aaron Ashley has pinpointed some early value. Alcaraz has more to prove than Sinner in Australia, having yet to go beyond the quarter-final in four attempts, but he is such a precocious talent that it may be worth chancing him at bigger odds than the Italian. There is no reason that the hard courts Down Under shouldn’t suit the slick Spaniard, who has already shown his versatility with wins at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, and there is potential for Sinner’s ongoing doping allegations to derail him. Alcaraz is arguably the most naturally gifted player on the ATP Tour and competition in the men’s game is light, with few able to match him, Sinner and Djokovic when push really comes to shove. Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion and has won in Australia ten times, but a recent straight-sets defeat to world number 293 Reilly Opelka in a warm-up event in Brisbane suggests his powers may finally be on the wane. Coco Gauff to win the Australian Open @ 9/2 Sabalenka holds obvious claims in her bid for a third straight Australian Open title, but the favourite is priced accordingly and may be dethroned by world number three Coco Gauff. The WTA Tour is more prone to throwing up surprises, but there is still a big gulf between the very best and the rest and Gauff falls firmly into that mould. The 20-year-old is already a Grand Slam champion, having won the US Open in 2023, and that bodes well given her tender age suggests that there should be plenty more to come. Gauff made the semi-final in Melbourne last season and she has had an excellent preparation for her return, recording four straight-sets victories at the United Cup. The American capped off last season by winning the WTA Finals, where she upstaged Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, and she appears to have worked hard over the break to ensure that she carries that form forward with her into the new year.
