Step Into Wonder at the TeamLab "Massless" Exhibition
The last two times I visited Tokyo, I tried desperately to get tickets to the TeamLab exhibit only to be met with "sold out" signs no matter how far in advance I tried to book. So, imagine my delight when I found out TeamLab has an installation experience right here in Beijing entitled "Massless." TeamLab is a group of interdisciplinary artists (sculptors, musicians, photographers, lighting designers, digital artists, etc.) from all over the globe who create immersive and interactive art instillations that you, as a viewer, journey through. The coolest part is that the way you choose to interact directly affects not only your experience but changes and evolves the art. They have created exhibits all over the world, including Japan, Singapore, Australia, Finland and Korea. The exhibit is on the tenth floor of Chaoyang Joy City. I followed the signs as I stepped off the elevator, and after presenting my ticket code via email, I was ushered into a dark hallway they motioned for me and my friends to walk down. It was a little disorienting at first, dark and eerily quiet. We tiptoed towards a doorway and were met with a riot of color, shape and sound. It felt like stepping into Alice's Wonderland as fields of flowers began to grow around us and every surface served as a projection screen. Our group began to wander off in different directions, discovering hidden rooms and meeting back up to whisper and point to a place the others should go check out. I had two favorite rooms. "Resonating Microcosms" is an alien-looking planet filled with oddly translucent eggs. If you're brave enough to touch them, you will find that each egg resonates a different frequency and light spectrum. I spent almost 20 minutes conducting my own cosmic symphony! The other, "Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers," is a large projection dome over a mirrored floor. The flowers shift and morph, and if you lay still on the floor, you eventually begin to feel as if you are floating in space. In addition, any sound you make in the room echoes and reverberates, so feel free to sing, recite poetry, or just tap out beats on the metallic floor. There were so many other amazing spaces to explore, including tiny hallways that transform into kaleidoscopes when you take a photo; walls of art that literally change when you touch them, sending images scurrying or eliciting bursts of stars; and the entire top floor that is made for jumping, diving and sliding with the art piece responding to each action. We spent almost three hours exploring, and I'm sure we didn't discover every aspect of the space. I do encourage you to avoid wearing skirts or low-cut tops as many surfaces are mirrored, and comfortable shoes are a must as you will be walking, climbing and jumping. I also suggest you use the free lockers in the cloakroom so you can travel hands-free. It's triggered by facial recognition to open, so you don't need to worry about safely storing your valuables. I strongly urge you to go check out this unique art experience for yourself! The TeamLab "Massless" exhibition is taking place at Chaoyang Joy City and runs until Mar 31. Tickets are RMB 99 and can be purchased by scanning the QR code below.
