‘Standoff’ – Brock Purdy injury makes $300m contract decision harder as 49ers face uncertain future

The San Francisco 49ers’ big Brock Purdy decision has become even more difficult. Purdy is anticipating a massive payday and could become one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL this offseason. GettyBrock Purdy’s big stats were erased by another loss and injury[/caption] Some estimates have Purdy receiving up to $60 million a year with a new extension, which would be a life-changing haul for ‘Mr. Irrelevant,’ who was the final pick of the 2022 draft. But San Francisco fell to 6-10 on Monday Night Football with a tough 40-34 home loss to the Detroit Lions. Add in a late-game injury to Purdy’s right elbow, and a bad night became even worse for the 49ers, who failed to make the playoffs a year after almost beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Purdy told reporters that it felt like his surgically repaired throwing elbow was “on fire” after Detroit’s Brian Branch took down the QB with a hard sack. As Purdy fell to the ground, his elbow hit the facemask of another Lions defender. “It doesn’t feel the best,” Purdy said. “But it doesn’t feel that bad, so we’ll see tomorrow.” Right now, the former Iowa State QB is only making $985,000 a year, which is one of the best value contracts in the NFL. An five-year extension could see him receive a $300 million payday. Giving that much cash to a QB who was the final pick of the draft and keeps running into elbow injuries could backfire for a 49ers team that is already facing injury issues, chemistry problems and other large contracts. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero explained the 49ers’ situation with Purdy to The Rich Eisen Show. x@jmthriveptPurdy was taken down by a Detroit defender[/caption] x@jmthriveptThe sack was followed by a hard hit[/caption] x@jmthriveptPurdy almost lost his helmet in the collision[/caption] “He’s eligible for a contract extension starting at the end of the regular season, which is in all likelihood going to be the end of the season as a whole for the 49ers,” Pelissero said. “Next year is a contract year. If a deal is going to get done, I would anticipate it is at the top of the quarterback market for all the reasons I just said. “That’s Dak’s (Prescott) number. That is $60 million per year.  “Are the 49ers willing to go to that, or are they going to be in a situation where you could have a standoff with your starting quarterback into the offseason? “Based upon his production, based on the playoff success, I’m sure he feels like he deserves to be paid at the top of the market.” Purdy played well on Monday before his injury. He completed 27-of-35 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns with a 116 rating. But he also threw two interceptions and helped set up Detroit’s come-from-behind win. “Can’t pay 40m+ for this,” one fan tweeted. “Purdy did this last game,” a second fan posted. “Threw a huge pick near the end of the game. This is a pattern.” “Let’s get an elite QB, no more messing around,” a third fan wrote. Purdy has made $2.8 million with the 49ers in his career. He’s been a huge bargain, thus far, but he must be one of the NFL’s best QBs to average $50m to $60m a year. talkSPORT is your home of the NFL on UK radio, and you can stay up to date with all the latest from around the league via our dedicated ‘EndZone’ YouTube channel. talkSPORT will bring you live coverage across Week 18 with a double header featuring the Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions.

Some estimates have Purdy receiving up to $60 million a year with a new extension, which would be a life-changing haul for ‘Mr.

“But it doesn’t feel that bad, so we’ll see tomorrow.”

Right now, the former Iowa State QB is only making $985,000 a year, which is one of the best value contracts in the NFL.
