‘Staggered’ Gareth A Davies responds to viral clash with Johnny Fisher’s furious dad
Gareth A Davies has responded to his viral clash with Johnny Fisher’s dad, ‘Big John’, who furiously ripped into the talkSPORT reporter. The boxing broadcaster was on the receiving end of a stunning rant from Fisher’s father after the fighter’s controversial points victory over Dave Allen on Saturday night. Fisher secured a split decision victory over Allen, much to Gareth A Davies’ surpriseMark Robinson/Matchroom Despite seemingly dominating the contest, Allen fell to a split decision defeat in Saudi Arabia – an outcome that stunned Davies and ex-boxer Spencer Oliver on talkSPORT’s coverage. Reacting live, Davies said: “That is a disgraceful decision. The first four rounds are Johnny Fisher’s, the fifth round was a 10-8 and after that Dave Allen did the better work in almost every round. “I do not see those scores being fair, I’m afraid.” Oliver added: “Those scores are diabolical. That was not a close contest, there was only one winner in that contest. “I love Johnny Fisher as a person, I love what he’s done and what he’s built up there, but there was only one winner in that contest and it was Dave Allen.” That criticism didn’t go down well with ‘Big John’, who called out Davies in an interview on which has since gone viral. Fisher Snr, who has become famous in his own right for his antics on social media, gatecrashed Davies’ interview with his son and gave him an earful. He said: “I totally respect anyone’s opinion who thought that Dave won the fight, but the way you and Spencer went over the top… “I thought you were serious journalists but you showed how incapable you are of reporting on a proper fight. “Johnny won the fight. He won rounds 1-4, round 10 and round 7 you could have called for Johnny. Anyone can say that Dave won the fight and Dave’s team themselves said that it wasn’t a robbery and you’re shouting out things like that? I’ve lost all respect for you.” Standing by his decision, Davies appeared on talkSPORT Breakfast to respond to the video after it went viral on social media. He said: “It’s staggering to me that someone can’t take it when you make a comment. “I called it diabolical, I thought the judging was a disgrace and that Dave Allen won clearly. “Listen, John’s a great character and Johnny, who is more important to me than his father, I don’t think that he won the fight and I just gave my opinion on it. I thought the judging was a disgrace and that Dave Allen won the fight. “I also said that Johnny Fisher showed so much mettle to stay in the fight and it made for an amazing event and an amazing fight. “People have their opinions and his son has just been through a 10-round war, but it wasn’t a criticism of Johnny who didn’t do anything wrong, it was the judging. “I wasn’t criticising his son – and I think that his scoring makes it a draw anyway!” Boxing WhatsApp channel Get the latest fight news, reaction and the best opinion from talkSPORT pundits in our Boxing WhatsApp channel.
