Peaky Boy is one of a few from Seven Barrows to do so this season and won convincingly over 2m4f here in the November meeting. Now he reappears for the Christmas Meeting but upped to over 3m for the first time. He’s unbeaten over jumps and dangerously unexposed still have only raced three times over obstacles. Given he’s such a strong favourite amongst these rivals he’s got to be well regarded over further, which would suit given his pedigree. Stage Star This Fame And Glory gelding won this race last year when running on seasonal debut as the 4/1 favourite. Prior to that he failed to fire at Aintree but did win the Turners Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham Festival a month prior. This year though, he comes into this fairly lightly raced over the last year and a half, but did do well in amongst the action at Aintree for the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase, placing just under four lengths off of Minella Drama – he was carrying a stone more. In that race he also took a keen hold and tried to make it another frontrunning display, but was headed by Hitman and Ahoy Senor along with the winner. But he loves it at Cheltenham with two wins from four appearances and should benefit from that recent run appearing for the second time since having a wind op. Stage Star won this last year when 7lb lower, but has proven himself as a Graded runner since, so could defy top-weight again. Libberty Hunter Triple Trade has been disappointing on his first two starts this season and is now 5lb lower than when he last won over fences, back in December 2023. Risky to side with as a result and that leaves just five runners. Master Chewy is by far the top-rated and top-weight, carrying a minimum of 10lb more than Libberty Hunter to 24lb higher than Triple Trade. He fell here in the Arkle in March when 22/1 as well as in the Tingle Creek last weekend, so makes a quick return to action having fell quite early in that race. He did place well at Ascot in November when also giving away plenty of weight so does have the potential and drops in class here to try and get back to winning ways. Libberty Hunter appeals most though as though he was about 11 lengths behind Master Chewy at Aintree in April, he now gets 10lb from that horse here giving him a great chance. He’s not as prone to falling either so is a bit of a safer bet given his last four runs have all shown better jumping and it’s tough to back Master Chewy off top-weight having only just raced last week and fell. Skyjack Hijack This gelding has been a huge improver for trainer Jennie Candlish, winning six times from ten runs over hurdles. His latest was a demolition job over Zanndabad justifying a shade on odds-on at Newcastle two weeks ago. Each of his last five wins have been by wide margins, as he made the most of running off the same weight at Exeter and Newcastle again. He’s only been upped 6lb for that latest win and though he’s been busy over the last couple of months has been running so comfortably he ought to win again as the most experienced of these runners, all of which have to make marked improvements to keep up with this Sean Quinlan ride.
