KSI heaps praise on ‘smart’ John Fury and explains why he is crucial to Tommy Fury’s success
KSI believes John Fury’s brash personality is extremely beneficial to Tommy Fury’s career. Fury Sr has been criticised by several members of the boxing fraternity for ‘making everything about him’ by causing chaos in the build-up to his son’s fights. KSI believes Fury Sr plays a very important part in his son’s careerGETTY Before Tyson Fury‘s inaugural encounter with Oleksandr Usyk in May, John landed himself in hot water for headbutting a member of the Ukrainian’s team. Meanwhile, the head of the Fury family stole the headlines again last week at Tommy’s launch press conference for his upcoming clash with Darren Till, when he sparked pandemonium by throwing a glass of water at the former UFC star. But KSI, who is all too familiar with Fury Sr’s antics from his own fight with Tommy, insists John plays a crucial part in selling his son’s bouts. “I think he is quite smart, I think he knows that Tommy isn’t good at speaking,” KSI told talkSPORT.com over in Qatar. “And he’s just there like, ‘You know what? Let me just make it all about me. “‘We can cause a scene and then we can dip out quick.’ “Notice every time there is a press conference it is always only ten minutes because he wants to go in and get out and then go back to training his son.” However, not everyone agrees with KSI’s assessment, with former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch believing John’s actions during the Till press conference were ‘pathetic’. “The usual pathetic childish behaviour from a grown man,” said Froch. “Darren Till did have a lot to say and he was very vocal. Fury Sr always steals the headlines at press eventsGETTY “But at the end of the day it’s not about him, it’s about Darren Till and Tommy Fury so why is Big John Fury, the fighting man, getting involved? “Why the f*** is he getting involved? Has he been sacked by Tyson Fury? “Did Tyson tell him to f****** do one and now he’s with Tommy Fury trying to get some of the limelight? “I don’t know, but same old s***. Darren Till totally wrote him off.” While Fury Sr is a nailed-on member of Tommy’s team, there has been considerable debate as to whether he should be in Tyson’s corner for the Usyk rematch. Tyson’s corner, led by SugarHill Steward and involving assistant Andy Lee and dad John, came under fire for being too crowded. Fury takes on ex-UFC star Till in his next bout, with there already been drama in the build-upGETTY John was singled out by pundits for shouting over Steward, who is supposed to be the main voice between rounds.
