Pop icon Kesha is stepping into 2025 with bold intentions and is not afraid to let the world know she's manifesting big things.
2024 has proven to be a monumental year for the pop icon. After nearly two decades of legal battles that cast a long shadow over her career, Kesha finally gained full ownership of her voice and artistic direction in March 2024—a victory celebrated not just by her but by her loyal fanbase worldwide.
In February 2024, Kesha took another significant step forward by signing with Crush Music, a move that signaled a fresh start and a commitment to shaping her future on her own terms. But she didn't stop there. By September, Kesha announced the launch of her very own record label, Kesha Records, marking a powerful statement of independence and creative control.
Under her new label, Kesha wasted no time delivering fresh music to her fans, releasing a track titled "Joyride," a bold and assertive pop anthem celebrating her hard-won freedom.
Kesha Admits She Is A 'Manifestor'
In a recent interview with "On the Red Carpet," the 37-year-old "Die Young" singer opened up about her hopes and wishes for the upcoming year.
"For 2025, I'm manifesting a sugar daddy and a yacht, and I would like to be on my sugar daddy's yacht in Italy as soon as possible, baby," she said before sharing her perspective on New Year's resolutions, confessing, "I'm more of a manifestor."
"I'm kind of like a witch that goes into the woods, decides what I'm going to manifest, and then I'll spend the year making sh-t happen," Kesha revealed. "So in a way I have resolutions, but, like, a little more b-tchy and a little more witchy."
Kesha's Legal Battles With Her Record Label
In October 2014, pop star Kesha filed a civil lawsuit against her longtime producer, Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald), in California, setting off one of the most high-profile legal battles in music history. The lawsuit alleged sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, and emotional abuse over the course of their decade-long professional relationship.
Kesha claimed that Dr. Luke had drugged, sexually assaulted, and subjected her to ongoing emotional manipulation throughout their time working together. At the heart of her legal filing was a plea to be released from her contract with Kemosabe Records, Dr. Luke's label under Sony Music Entertainment.
In response to Kesha's accusations, Dr. Luke filed a counter-lawsuit in New York, alleging defamation and breach of contract. He claimed that Kesha's accusations were fabricated in an effort to secure a more lucrative recording deal and damage his reputation.
The Birth Of #FreeKesha
In 2016, a New York judge delivered a devastating blow to Kesha's case by denying her request for a preliminary injunction. This ruling meant she could not record music outside her existing contract with Dr. Luke and Sony Music Entertainment while the legal case played out.
The decision sparked public outrage and ignited the #FreeKesha movement, a viral social media campaign advocating for her freedom and justice. Fans and fellow artists, including Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Kelly Clarkson, rallied behind Kesha, using their platforms to amplify her voice and demand change.
Kesha Releases' Rainbow'
Despite the legal turmoil and Dr. Luke's continued control over her contract, Kesha managed to release her album "Rainbow" in 2017 under Kemosabe Records. The album was more than just music—it was a powerful declaration of resilience and healing. Tracks like "Praying" became anthems of survival, with raw lyrics addressing her struggles and the emotional toll of her fight for freedom.
The album was met with critical acclaim, earning praise for its vulnerability, strength, and artistic depth. Yet, even in this moment of triumph, Dr. Luke remained financially tied to her success, profiting from every album sale and stream under the terms of her contract.
Kesha Reflects On $10 Million Legal Fight With Dr. Luke
Earlier this year, Kesha shared that she feels a deep sense of "gratitude" and "happiness" following the release of "Joyride," her first single as an independent artist since ending her partnership with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records and RCA.
"I feel free for the first time since I was 18 years old," she said, per Variety. "I so appreciate every single person that has streamed 'Joyride,' and I love the videos that are being made. I've spent almost 10 years in litigation and millions of dollars in legal fees. This joy has been hard-fought for me, so I love that people are ready to 'Joyride' with me."
