‘Just for some money’ – Gervonta Davis issues criticism to Mike Tyson in surprise U-turn over Jake Paul fight
Gervonta Davis has surprisingly criticised Mike Tyson after he lost to Jake Paul. Heavyweight legend Tyson returned in a money-spinning bout at 58 years old against YouTuber-turned-influencer Paul last month, but was beaten on points in a lacklustre display. But he stood to earn at least $20 million from the event, which was a huge success commercially with more than 60 million people tuning in to watch the fight on streaming service Netflix. Many have levelled criticism regarding the fight at Paul, who was 31-years younger than Tyson at the age of 27. But Davis has surprisingly questioned the former undisputed champion, in a brutal assessment on the fight. “Who told Mike Tyson to fight anyway?,” he said. “Yeah [it tarnished Mike’s legacy]. It definitely did. For some money.” His criticism comes as a big surprise given his comments immediately after the fight, where he heaped the blame on Paul. ‘Tank’ also wrote an emotional tribute to Tyson, insisting he would still rank as a boxing legend despite the defeat going down on his professional record. He wrote in an Instagram post: “To the bozo that shared the ring with Mike, you a whole bozo for this and you didn’t get the job done s***head.” Davis then added: “You will always be a boxing legend, whether you like it or not. Tyson landed just 18 of his 97 total punches thrown over the eight round distance, and showed visible signs of a total decline. Both Paul and Tyson were reportedly carrying injuries into the fight, with the latter also having had a raft of heath concerns. ‘Iron Mike’ even claimed he had nearly died in the build-up to the clash. Tyson is now unlikely to fight again “This is one of those situations when you lost but still won,” Tyson said. “I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time. I almost died in June. Had eight blood transfusions. “Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won.”
