By the time the Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday, arrives in theaters in August 2025, 22 years will have passed since the remake’s premiere.
Jamie Lee Curtis, 66, explained why fans have had to wait more than two decades for the sequel during an appearance on TODAY on Thursday, Dec. 12, while promoting her films The Last Showgirl and The Sticky.
“We couldn’t have made this movie until now, because Lindsay [Lohan] had to be old enough to have a 15 year old,” Curtis emphasized.
In Freakier Friday, Anna Coleman (Lohan, 38) will play a mother to her own daughter and soon-to-be step daughter.
“She has a 15 year old, so I’m now a grandma,” Curtis said.
Curtis hinted that the film will be filled with the “nostalgia” that longtime Freaky Friday fans are hoping to see in the sequel.
“And it checks every box that you would want,” Curtis said. “It has the nostalgia of the original movie with Pink Slip and Chad Michael Murray.”
Murray, 43, played Anna’s crush Jake in the 2003 film.
“Boy, do women love Chad Michael Murray!” Curtis exclaimed. “And it has some new elements with it.”
Actors bringing new characters to life in the sequel include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Manny Jacinto, according to Variety.
Jacinto is cast to play Lohan’s husband in the sequel. “Manny is lovely, so funny," Lohan told Entertainment Weekly.
