How To Turn On Type and Translate in WeChat
We recently discovered a feature on WeChat that automatically translates your text as you type. To use the feature, you simply long press in the text box and select translate. The feature currently supports translating in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese and English, although we've heard feedback from some Beijinger followers that they have other languages available too. Some users have reported that they've been able to use this feature for a while, however it seems that for many, the feature has only recently popped up as an option. Others have reported that the feature isn't showing up on their WeChat. If the translate feature isn't showing for you, here are a couple of things you can try first: Make sure you have the latest version of WeChat (version 8.0.56) Make sure your phone software is also the latest version Try switching your keyboard. It seems that some keyboards don't support the translate function, so you can try changing to your phone's default keyboard or another keyboard. One keyboard we've found that works for us is Google's GBoard. If these don't work, then there is another work around that we tested and got to work, however you'll need to change your WeChat to Chinese in order to do this. 1. First, change your WeChat to Chinese by going "me", then "settings", then "general" and then click "language" and select "简体中文" (Simplified Chinese).2. Search for your own name to chat with yourself, and then send the exact same message in English three times, e.g. "how are you," "how are you," "how are you." 3. Then, you should get this pop-up: "长按输入框可以开启边写边译" (press and hold the input box to enable translation while writing). 4. Now, when you long press, "边写边译" (write and translate) should show up as an option.5. Lastly, change your WeChat back to English by clicking on "我" (me) in the bottom right, then "设置" (settings) at the bottom, then "通用" (general), then "多语言" (more languages) and select "English." 6. When you go into a chat and long press, "translate" should now display as an option. Did you manage to get it to work? Let us know in the comments!
