Nobody really looks forward to reading a Hims review. But hair loss comes for us all eventually—no matter how much you deny it or consider yourself excluded—and for many men, the telehealth company can help. The signs of hair loss manifest differently in everyone: recession, crown thinning, follicle shrinkage, or some dastardly combination of the three. In 2025, there are plenty of hair loss remedies to consider, like plasma injections (PRP) and low-level laser treatments (LLLT), both of which can be prohibitively expensive. The far more affordable route includes common treatments found in hair loss subscription services like Hims, Keeps, and Roman. Those tend to include minoxidil and/or finasteride, in oral or topical forms, as well as hybrids of both medicines.

Hims is quite likely the first brand you think of when it comes to telemedicine for hair loss—that’s how the brand got its start, making it easy for guys to meet with a board-certified dermatologist on the web, and then have the best hair loss treatments (both prescription and over-the-counter) delivered right to their doorstep. Oral minoxidil is becoming increasingly popular, but is only available through prescription. It comes with an increased risk of side effects since it is a cosmetically dosed version of Loniten, a blood pressure medicine. However, oral minoxidil is generally deemed the new gold standard in hair growth since it provides the same hair-anchoring benefits from the inside out. That said, it can also increase beard and body hair growth—for better or for worse—so be warned.

Hims makes it extremely easy to get oral minoxidil with the recent launch of its supplement chews. You can get your daily dose of minoxidil with or without finasteride (more on this soon), and depending on your health history, you can even get a pill that combines both treatments with low-grade tadalafil (generic Cialis), which is designed to treat erectile dysfunction.

Finasteride & Minoxidil + Supplement Chew

Of the two key hair loss treatment medicines, finasteride (you may be familiar with brand-name Propecia) is arguably the more effective one, but it also comes with greater risks. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which is the culprit behind hair follicle miniaturization in male-pattern alopecia. DHT inhibitors are also key for slowing or halting hair recession. Unlike general crown thinning, recession cannot be revived once lost, which makes starting a finasteride regimen before aggressive receding occurs such a smart move.

One thing to consider before starting a finasteride treatment plan is that a small percentage of users will experience sexual side effects (decreased libido, difficulty getting erections) with the pills. In very rare cases, finasteride can cause more serious side effects, which is why it’s crucial to take into account your medical history and consult a healthcare professional beforehand. Still, the month supply of daily 1mg finasteride pills remains a pillar in Hims’ product assortment for good reason: It works.

Experts suggest using compounded minoxidil/finasteride/tadalafil options only after you've seen how oral finasteride impacts your sex drive. If it does, then a compounded version might be for you, or you might opt for a different course of action so that the ED medication doesn’t cover up a larger issue or other health concerns. (As always, consult with your healthcare provider first.)

It’s also becoming increasingly popular to apply finasteride topically, rather than orally. Many brands will even provide compound topicals so that you can apply both minoxidil and finasteride together, once a day. Hims offers a topical compound spray and serum in addition to its oral meds, and while I’m a huge fan of oral minoxidil, I think the compound spray and serum from Hims is the true “gold standard,” since it provides the most benefits with the least amount of side effects.

Rx Hair Loss Spray + Ketoconazole + Biotin

There’s really no such thing as hair loss shampoo, but most dermatologists will tell you that dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole is one of the best ways to sneak hair-anchoring benefits into your shampoo protocol. In addition to controlling dandruff, it can also help inhibit the collection of DHT at the follicles, making it a terrific two-in-one ingredient.

That’s why I particularly love the topical compound from Hims, which combines minoxidil, finasteride, and ketoconazole (with a little added biotin as a treat) for a full-court press against follicle miniaturization. I’m throwing around the phrase “gold standard” a little too freely, but Hims keeps one-upping its offerings and raising its bar.

Hims Biotin + Nutrient Gummies

Biotin + Nutrient Gummies

Hims positions its biotin-dense supplements as a great way to grow hair thicker and faster. Yes, you might notice improved growth, but biotin alone won’t help you keep your hair. However, if you choose to incorporate this delicious little treat into your daily hair care routine, I say go for it—just don’t put too much stock in its “hair retention” claims. FWIW, there are a bunch of other great supplement options out there, such as Nutrafol, which include DHT-fighting ingredients like saw palmetto and ashwagandha (though they aren’t as deliciously chewable, cute, or squishy as these bear gummies from Hims).

Hims for Hair Loss: Review

Hims’ original slate of offerings included two topical options for minoxidil (a foam and serum) as well as oral finasteride. These are without question some of the most effective hair loss treatments, though the script has flipped on the preferred route of administration for both—and Hims is keeping up with the curve.

In our book, Hims knocks it out of the park when it comes to messaging and customizing hair loss treatments to users’ individual needs. Preferences differ regarding which hair loss medicines we want (or are willing) to take, as well as whether or not to administer each orally or topically. Hims even has compound customization options that allow you to combine key steps into a singular application or supplement for streamlined solutions—just fill out the questionnaire, and you'll be on your way.

Hims Hair Care: Review

Hims’ hair care lineup does a great job supporting your existing hair growth efforts, primarily by offering customers a shampoo and conditioner duo that helps add volume to fine, thinning, or limp hair, and another that visibly thickens each strand upon rinsing for a temporary boost of overall fullness. (The conditioner will be more important in the latter, in terms of coating the strands to provide that added fullness effect, which tends to fade away by day’s end.)

The brand also has a terrific detox shampoo which uses zinc pyrithone to balance any flaking or itching, and even if you don’t regularly experience dandruff, it’s a great periodic scalp “toner” to keep irritation at bay. Still, I wish they had a ketoconazole option for shampoo, since it would work so effectively in their hair loss lineup. Again, no shampoo will serve as your defense against hair loss, but ketoconazole is the one active dandruff-fighting ingredient that can help prevent DHT accumulation on the scalp.

Hims Hair Dyes: Review

Hims also offers hybrid hair dyes/conditioners, though they’re only available at retailers like Walmart as opposed to on Hims’ own website. You can choose from four shades for now: light brown, medium brown, dark brown, and black. Each will “blend” your lighter or gray hairs into a good middle-ground tone that masks any salt and pepper—and won’t leave you with a block-colored dye job. (Full disclosure: I have never tested these, but they have solid customer reviews.)

More Offerings from Hims

Hims isn’t just a men’s grooming outpost. It has expanded into everything men’s health, from prescription medications and ED treatments (like sildenafil) for premature ejaculation and sexual health and well-being, to solutions for anxiety, stress, depression, poor sleep, weight loss, and other health conditions—even skin care. You can even get cold sore treatment options, and Hims also has a women’s counterpart (Hers) which provides a range of products targeting all these same key categories.

Hims FAQ

Does Hims take insurance?

TL;DR: No. From the site: “Currently, we are unable to accept insurance due to specific requirements that must be met for reimbursement. However, we are delighted to offer our products at a substantially reduced cost, with discounts ranging from 50% to 80% off retail prices. This pricing structure allows our products to remain affordable and easily accessible to consumers. We are pleased to announce that our Weight Loss treatment options are now eligible for FSA and HSA reimbursement.” We'll follow up and update this article should that change.

Does Hims offer erectile dysfunction medication?

Yes, Hims offers a variety of erectile dysfunction medications including sildenafil (generic Viagra) and tadalafil. They also offer discreet forms of the medication, like mints.
