‘He’s behind this’ – Wrestling fans think hidden ‘easter egg’ gives away The Rock’s return for WWE on Netflix
If WWE were hoping to keep The Rock’s return a secret, super sleuths online have rumbled them, or at least they think they have. Other than what appears to now have been a rather random cameo at the end of the Badd Blood Premium Live Event, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been absent from the wrestling world since the Spring. Fans are hoping The Rock will be around for WWE’s first show on streaming platform NetflixWWE Back at the start of 2024, he immersed himself fully in the industry that helped send him on his way to fame and fortune with an in-depth storyline and his first major match back in over a decade. Cody Rhodes was the subject of his ire as The American Nightmare took Rock and then-champ Roman Reigns to task over the Undisputed WWE Championship, dethroning him at WrestleMania XL in Philadelphia. Rock then showed up the following night on Raw to declare he’d be back soon enough but, except for a fleeting glimpse in October, fans haven’t seen him since. WWE are, however, lining up a WrestleMania-worthy show for the January 6 edition of Monday Night Raw – the company’s debut on Netflix as a $5bn broadcast deal finally commences after a huge build-up. Rumours have circulated that there will be some big names on hand for the epic launch and, naturally, The Rock is among them, with the multiple world champion tipped to show up and no doubt ruffle a few feathers. Just how WWE might go about bringing him back into the fold remains a mystery. A straight-up confrontation with Rhodes seems less likely given the champ has Kevin Owens to contend with just now, and given the company enjoy threaded together more detailed and intricate stories. That latter factor has had some deciding they’ve cracked the case of what Rocky may be up to next, thanks to some cleverly-worded clues dropped not by Rhodes or Reigns – but by Scottish powerhouse Drew McIntyre. Angry man McIntyre has been on the warpath for some time now as arguably WWE’s most creative and cutting villain, and he’s recently been laying into fans and his colleagues for what he perceives as a lack of support received during a recent spell away. Battling family and personal issues, McIntyre has said ‘only one person reached out’ to him during his sabbatical – and some viewers are convinced that one person is The Great One himself. Rock and McIntyre went viral earlier this year after the Hollywood megastar marked the Brit’s new contract at WWE with a lavish new gift – a stunning Claymore sword. Even as far back as 2020, Rock was swift to endorse McIntyre as a world title challenger after his Royal Rumble win. Drew McIntyre has been in blistering form on the mic in WWE over the last yearWWE/Getty The Rock’s fondness for Drew McIntyre goes back a long wayInstagram Those clues are adding up for some, one posting on social media: “I think it is the Rock who sent Drew McIntyre [to attack Reigns’ cousin Jey Uso] and he is the one who checked up on Drew. “Remember back in May it was the rock who posted that Drew’s contract was renewed. What if it’s the Final Boss that has sent bounty hunter Drew?” Another added of McIntyre’s attack on Uso: “The Rock has to be behind this, Drew has already dopped the easter egg, he’s coming for Roman again next.” A third post read: “I’m predicting The Rock and Drew McIntyre have a form of ‘partnership’ at the end of [Raw’s debut on Netflix].” Even former WWE star Tommy Dreamer couldn’t resist getting in on the act, chiming in: “They’ve not revealed who that one person is [who reached out to Drew], which is interesting to me. “Don’t know where they are going but he keeps on saying this and when you say things there’s usually a reason for it. Could this person turn out to be, I don’t know, The Rock? This one person who called him…” WWE fans will be treated to an epic show on the Netflix debut edition of Raw in any case, with CM Punk and Seth Rollins due to meet in a heated battle, while Reigns and Solo Sikoa engage in Tribal Combat.
