Five New BJ Restaurants Gain Diamonds in 2025 Black Pearl Guide

The 2025 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide – which can be seen as China’s version of the Michelin Guide – was released last week and saw 37 Beijing restaurants on the list. Launched in 2018 by Meituan-Dianping, the annual guide evaluates restaurants based on culinary skill, consumer experience, and inheritance and innovation. Instead of stars, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide awards diamonds: three diamond restaurants are "must visit once in a lifetime", two diamond restaurants are "perfect for special occasions", and one diamond restaurants are "great for family/friends gatherings". Of the 37 Beijing restaurants on the list, there is one three-diamond restaurant, four two-diamond restaurants, and 32 three-diamond restaurants. The number of Black Pearl restaurants is down one from last year, with some places losing their diamonds and other restaurants gaining diamonds. This year saw Jingji Aristocrat Cuisine by Rong and LAMDRE both move up to two diamonds this year, while Shengyongxing Roasted Duck Restaurant moved from two diamonds to one diamond. In the 2025 awards, five new restaurants claimed one diamond: Restaurant 1996, The Georg, Chushan Siji, Xinchangfu New Hunan Cuisine and Sushi Fujimoto. One Beijing restaurant, Jingyan · Hanlin Academy (京艷·翰林书院), managed to win a "Dish of the Year Award" for their a cold smoked cucumber dish (金葱冷吃金沙参 jīn cōng lěng chī jīn shāshēn), one of ten restaurants to gain this prestigious award. It’s interesting to compare the Black Pearl Guide with the 2025 Beijing Michelin Guide, with a key difference being that the two restaurants awarded three Michelin stars, Chao Shang Chao and Xin Rong Ji, were only awarded two diamonds. Another contrast is that the only restaurant to be awarded three diamonds, Gastro Aesthetics DaDong, only received one Michelin star in this year’s guide.
