It’s the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle on Saturday at Newcastle and it’s been one of the most talked about already with the withdrawal of Constitution Hill and replacement with the impressive Sir Gino. He had revealed that he was lame two days after and of course won’t be able to recover in time and do the necessary work to get to full fitness which was already an issue after that work at Newbury was his first at a course in ten months. He was seen with Sir Gino to the side who looked in great condition and that tracks with his great form from last season and looks to be an exciting prospect at just the age of four. You should never discount a chance from the Willie Mullins yard though, even with the rightful plaudits, as Mystical Power has also got great form. Mystical Power seemed quite unfortunate not to have won at Cheltenham Festival and then went on to win, again ahead of Firefox twice and reversing that form with Slade Steel too. Sir Gino was a non-runner for Cheltenham and instead went to Aintree in April, beating Kargese the Triumph Hurdle second placed horse. Both Sir Gino and Mystical Power should be very closely matched, and they are in the ratings too, so it should be a great battle. Amongst the many names for this race early on, Salver also stands out for trainer Gary & Josh Moore. He was a great each-way bet at Cheltenham in the Triumph, placing third and there was always a suspicion having previously gone unbeaten over hurdles, he wasn’t quite at his best. He avoided a seasonal debut at Ascot in the Grade 2 Howden Ascot Hurdle last weekend due to the good ground, which was won by Lucky Place in a thrilling battle between all four finishers to the line. Lump Sum will also wanting to prove himself after a disappointing 5th placed finish at Aintree’s Grade 1 Top Novices’ Hurdle, having gone close to Jeriko Du Reponet. He emerged ahead of Steel Ally last month on seasonal debut and that form has been further boosted with that Sam Thomas-trained horse winning well at Haydock at the weekend. You’d also expect the likes of Brentford Hope and Nemean Lion to make themselves known in this race, but it does all seem to be geared towards the hurdling newcomers. Sir Gino The ground looks likely to be in the realm of good to soft on Saturday with little rain expected over the week up in Newcastle. That bodes well for both leading contenders in the market too, with form on a variety of grounds.
