A 25-year-old father in California has been arrested after being accused of killing his 5-month-old baby by allegedly falling asleep on the child while intoxicated, police have said.

On Sunday, Jan. 19 at approximately 11:53 p.m. local time, authorities responded to reports of a "5-month-old baby not breathing" at the 800 block of Violet Way in the Butte County town of Paradise, Paradise Police Department (PPD) said in a news release.

Police officers arrived on the scene and "began life-saving measures," per the release before Cal Fire and Butte emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrived and "took over medical care."

"Unfortunately, life-saving measures did not work and the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene," the release stated.

Authorities identified the man as Daniel Eastman, a resident of Paradise, adding that he'd been "arrested and booked into Butte County Jail."

Police confirmed that PPD detectives had been "called out to the scene to assist in the investigation," adding that officers had determined that "the baby’s father was intoxicated and fell asleep on the baby, resulting in the baby’s death."

Eastman is now facing charges of manslaughter and child abuse resulting in great bodily injury or death, per the release.

The suspect's bail has been set at $80,000, police confirmed.

"The investigation is ongoing, and the Department of Justice was called in to assist by processing the scene and collecting evidence. An autopsy will be scheduled to assist in determining the exact cause of death," officers concluded in the release.
