Eve Hewson Says Response to “The Perfect Couple”'s Opening Dance Scene 'Warmed My Heart' Despite Costars' Reluctance to Do It

Eve Hewson is reacting to the popularity of The Perfect Couple’s famous dance montage.
The actress, 33, revealed what the cast of the Netflix hit thought about the dance in her Byrdie cover story. When they filmed the routine, Hewson explained it wasn’t clear it would become the opener — and she even joked that they all thought they were “in the clear” about it making it into the show at all.
“I don’t think anybody thought it would end up as the opening credits,” she said. “I don’t know why we didn’t connect the dots. I think we were all just in denial and thinking there’s absolutely no way this dance is going to make it in the show.”
“Then boom, it was the opening credits,” she added.
The flash mob-style sequence set to Meghan Trainor’s song “Criminals” blew up on social media once The Perfect Couple premiered. Fans began recreating the dance and posting videos, quickly making it a viral trend.
“What’s funny is the reaction really warmed my heart,” Hewson shared. “Because I was getting videos of my friend’s parents getting up and doing the dance. I was just getting all these really funny videos from people and realized people love this stuff. People want to have a good time. They want to dance, they want to just get involved. We don’t have to make depressing work all the time. How wonderful is that?”

As for whether she’d want to return to a potential next season, Hewson explained she is hesitant. Although she loves her cast members, she said she thinks her character, Amelia, is “trying to move on” and doesn’t have more story to tell.
“Everyone has been like, what do you think? Do you think she got lunch with Greer?” she said. “No, I think Amelia went through a traumatic experience with this family. One of the family members killed her best friend. I think she’s living in London, hanging out with the penguins, trying to move on.”
“I did hear something that Nicole [Kidman] was playing with the idea of a season two,” she continued. “I mean, I would work with all of them again in a heartbeat. Some of them are my best friends. I just don’t know how Amelia would fit into another season. I feel like she is just trying to have a peaceful life.”
In September, Hewson revealed how the cast found out they would be dancing in the murder mystery.
"We got a mysterious email from [showrunner] Susanne [Bier] saying, 'Guys, over the Christmas break, you have to learn this dance.' Everybody started having a mental breakdown over it, calling their agents," Hewson explained in a video shared by the streaming service. "The group chat was exploding with, 'I'm never gonna do this, I'm not gonna do this, I don't dance, I don't do it.' I, personally, was absolutely thrilled. I was like, 'This is gonna be the best thing I've ever done.'"
