Discover Hot Maxx, China's Answer to Dollar General
As expats, we know that we will pay more for imported products, and usually we just do without our favorite soap, snack or beverage from home. But every once in a while we break down and pay the premium for that nonessential but comforting item. Until you stumble across Hot Maxx, a chain of discount stores that's a treasure trove of goods from across Europe, the Americas, and the rest of Asia at steep discounts! The stock is never the same, and you need to be careful because some items are close to the expiration date, but on any given day you could find your favorite K beauty moisturizer, an excellent bottle of Spanish wine and Belgian chocolate all for less than RMB 100. Last time I visited the Sanlitun SOHO location, I discovered the Korean hair serum I normally pay RMB 55 for on sale for RMB 29, a box of mixed nuts I would have spent RMB 106 on at Sam's Club for only RMB 26, and brand name feminine products for less than half the cost listed on Taobao. There were also plenty of name brand international snacks, OTC medicines, and pet supplies but by far the best deal is found to the left of the cash register. A small wall of imported wine and spirits, many of which retail for over RMB 200, starting at only RMB 39. However, buyer beware: Not everything is a great deal. For example, I found an Innisfree face wash gift set that was actually about RMB 20 cheaper on Taobao, and you definitely want to double check expiration dates on things like vitamins, but generally speaking, it's a little taste of home at a slightly more reasonable price. For the Sanlitun SOHO location, you'll find it by heading down the north side escalators and looking on the left-hand side about 100 meters after you step off the stairs. For their other locations, simply search for Hot Maxx on Dianping or your preferred map app and find the closest one to you. Happy shopping!
