Inside The 'Make It Clap' Rapper's Near-Death Experience
The Blast shared that the rapper came clean in an interview and detailed the moment he got an epiphany about turning his life around for the better after he gained weight.
Rhymes explained that the scary incident happened in 2020 when he suffered an asthma attack-like experience post-sex. The health scare left him with an unquenchable thirst for an urgent transformation in his physical and mental health.
"One night, I was getting ready to have, make, you know … I was getting ready to have an intimate moment with my ex," the "Look At Me Now" performer began before adding, "I had a breathing issue after the intimate interaction."
He noted that he was "trying to inhale, and it felt like it wasn't working. I felt like I was having, like, an asthma attack — but I don't have asthma."
"So I walked out of the bedroom and went into the living room, and I was forcing myself to inhale, to relax," Rhymes explained.
The Father-of-five Turned His Then Partner's Snide Comments Into A Reason To Fight Weight Gain
Rhymes detailed his former partner's reaction to his physical appearance during one of their love-making episodes, which left him a bit insecure.
He admitted that the comments set something off in him, profoundly impacting his journey toward transforming his body, soul, and mind.
"She was like, 'Yo, this is not who I fell in love with,'" he noted. "She didn't know what had happened outside, but she was looking at my body and the weight. She was like, 'You gotta lose this weight. This breathing is scaring me." Rhymes explained that his partner recalled their first meeting, stating:
"When I met you, you wasn't like a musclehead, but you, you was slim, you was cut, you had your sh-t right. I need you to get back to who I fell in love with."
The New Yorker blamed his weight gain on the emotional effect of losing his father, which led him to find comfort in unhealthy food, alcohol, and other unhealthy life habits, thus leading to a surge in his weight.
"My dad died in 2014, and I drowned myself in work. I just kept drinking, smoking, eating bad—the whole nasty—and recording a bunch of songs just to escape the pain," Rhymes noted.
He continued saying, "I also had a 90 percent blockage in my throat because of polyps on my vocal cords, and my breathing was bad."

Rhymes explained that it happened in 2019 when his son and his security spent about 45 minutes getting him out of the car after he fainted. It was after this incident that the doctor reportedly told him he might die in his sleep. The 52-year-old shared:
"I was also scared about surgery for the polyps on my vocal cords because my voice is how I feed my family—the voice is the dragon. I ran from the surgery as long as I could, but after that weekend, I saw the doctor, and he looked at my throat, and he said I could die in my sleep. That's when I got surgery and started to get back in shape."
