Shields and Agassi were married from 1997 to 1999, and the former "Pretty Baby" actress credits the tennis champion for helping her separate from her manager mother, Teri, according to AARP Magazine.
The "Endless Love" star was oversexualized as a child actress and model, and she found Agassi's fame comforting at first because she was no longer the focus of the attention from the media.
"It was a transition that I needed," she recalled. "I wasn’t strong enough to separate from my mother on my own. I kept falling back in. With Andre, it also felt good to feel smaller than another, because he was so famous and number 1 in the world."
"Everywhere we went, he had tons of bodyguards," she continued. "I could sit back because it wasn’t my world. He was the first one out of the car when we arrived at events. It was a real kind of respite."
Shields Reveals What Made Her 'Glad' She And Agassi Had No Children
In her new book, "Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old," the actress noted that she was "glad" she and Agassi never had any children together because of something he said during their breakup.
"Be thankful we didn’t have children,' he said, 'because I would not have made this easy for you.' ... It would have been a disaster. When we got divorced, he made that very clear," wrote Shields, per PEOPLE.
The "Blue Lagoon" actress also revealed a conversation she had with Agassi about gaining weight.
"When I would profess my insecurities to my first husband, he would always say, ‘I wish you could see yourself the way I see you,’" she wrote. "However, when I said, 'Will you still love me if I’m big and fat?' (I meant once I got pregnant — an unfair question for anybody to ask another person I know!) I could never have expected his response."
Shields added that Agassi told her, "'I love you too much to let you get big and fat!' I definitely did not see that coming and must admit I started to spin a bit. But we all know how that relationship turned out."
Shields Was Given An Unwanted Procedure During Labia Surgery
As previously reported by The Blast, Shields underwent labia reduction surgery due to pain she endured while exercising and during "romantic moments."
Following the surgery, her doctor advised her that he'd performed an unwanted vaginal rejuvenation on Shields.
"When it was over, the doctor gave me the rundown of how it went," she wrote. "'I was very detailed,' he said, to my relief and excitement. And then: 'I was in there for four hours, and you know what I did? I tightened you up a little bit! Gave you a little rejuvenation!'"
Shields was floored by the news and wrote, "Wait, what?? I was shocked, speechless. I can’t remember how I responded, or even if I said anything. Was I supposed to say thank you?"
The Former Calvin Klein Model Was 'Enraged' About Unwanted Procedure
Despite her doctor assuming she'd be happy with the procedure, Shields says she was "enraged."
"This man surgically altered my body without my consent," she noted. "And he thought he had done me a favor by throwing in a 'bonus procedure'? The sheer gall of it enraged me."
"The fact that the most intimate parts of my body had been a public focal point for so long ... it was enough already," she wrote. "All I could think was, 'Why can’t everybody just leave my v-gina alone?' (Even now, as I write this, I know this will be the bit that makes headlines. Whatever. Women deserve all the information.)"
Shields Never Spoke To The Doctor Again
Shields shared that she never spoke to the doctor who performed the unwanted procedure again because she was insecure.
"I never took action against this doctor," she wrote. "I never even spoke to him about it again, in part because I had started to question myself."
She continued, "To wonder if he was right, that I should feel lucky. Or maybe, I thought, this was a needed improvement for my man, who was secretly dissatisfied but would have never dared address the subject of my 'loose down-theres?' It’s crazy to me that these ideas even popped into my head."
