The sprinter was wrestled to the ground, where an officer stuck him several times and then used a Taser, police said. According to the arrest report, police were investigating an unrelated active scene when Kerley approached the area and attempted to force his way through to his vehicle, which was parked nearby. Kerley had been told to go around the area, but he began to argue with officers, which led to a shoving match. According to officials, four officers tried to take Kerley into custody while he moved to evade arrest. “Despite officers’ efforts to deescalate the situation, the defendant assumed a fighting stance and continued to ignore their lawful commands,” a police statement said. “When the officers attempted to effectuate his arrest, he actively resisted their efforts. “Consequently, emergency back-up was requested, a dart-firing stun gun was effectively deployed and the defendant was arrested without any further incident.” After being stunned with the Taser, Kerley was taken to a local hospital and then to the Miami-Dade County jail. Local media in Miami reported that he made an appearance in court on Friday and has now been released on bail.
