BMW recently released its new video series titled “BMW Electrified,” which follows the automaker’s journey through the development of its first all-electric BMW M3 sports car model.
The company’s next-generation EV platform, dubbed Neue Klasse, is described by BMW as a sporty sedan with “Clear, elegant and timeless in its design” and “Large surfaces, distinctive lines, reduced to the essentials, with more room for characteristic features.”
“The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is more than ahead of its time. It represents the leap into a new age. And combines the latest innovations to produce an unforgettable experience,” BMW writes.
“BMW Electrified,” which, as of this writing has two episodes of the series available for viewing, follows what goes into developing the Neue Klasse version of the iconic BMW M sports car. So far, we know that the brand’s first battery-electric M3 is equipped with have four electric motors, which could lead to future torque vectoring opportunities, potentially making the M3 EV into the next best electric performance car fit for a racecourse. Drifting, anyone?
Before our imagination gets to out of control, BMW also released more photos of its electric M prototype on its Instagram account, revealing a classic boxy shape in what appears to be a “fun size” sedan:
Despite the nod to old school styling, it’s doubtful that BMW will offer an internal combustion version of the M3 or any of its BMW M sedans anytime soon. Like with most automakers today, the company is focused on pushing the boundaries of battery-electric performance:
“BMW M has always been about testing the boundaries of what is technically feasible and coming up with innovations to push them forward. The current development of a completely new all-electric drive technology is all about breaking past them. We take a look behind the scenes of the development of the BMW M HP BEV prototypes.”
“With the new generation of its all-electric drive, BMW M GmbH is about to reinvent itself once again. But tech-revolutions are nothing new to the company, since progress has a long tradition at BMW M. Our latest episode about the development of the BMW M HP BEV prototypes shows that heading towards the future has always been part of the brand’s history.”
