Andrea Bocelli isn't going anywhere.

This year, the Italian tenor celebrated his 30-year career in music by releasing a concert film titled Andrea Bocelli 30: The Celebration, as well as a Duets album that featured a slew of high-profile artists and friends.

Discussing the milestone in an interview with PEOPLE, Bocelli says he doesn't plan to stop anytime soon — and the idea of retirement sounds unappealing.

"When I think about retired people, I always think about old men in their sleepers who are sitting on the bench and feeding the pigeons," Bocelli, 66, says.

The "Fall on Me" singer instead believes one "can still feed the pigeons while you are working," and he'll keep going until he voice prevents him from doing so.

"What is for sure, [there] may come a day that my voice will not be the same one, and it wouldn't be suitable anymore to offer the performance that my audience would expect from me," he says.

Should that day come, he will "make an assessment on what to do."

Reflecting on his career thus far, Bocelli — who's currently on tour — says striving for anything more would be "up to the good Lord."

"The good Lord may keep surprising me, and I will welcome everything," he says. "Reality has by far exceeded expectations. I'm already very happy and pleased about what I have accomplished, and I will try to give my best until the very last performance that I shall do."

Bocelli's concert film was documented on three days in July at Tuscany’s Teatro del Silenzio. Over the course of the three-day event, he soaked in every moment and was filled with gratitude.

"I am an ex-countryside boy and I'm not easy to be moved. I don't get emotional so easily," he says. "However, at the same time, I'm more so used to the fact that I shouldn't be taking anything for granted."

"So everything that was happening in that fantastic backdrop of the Teatro del Silenzio, which is a piece of a world where I was born and raised, everything would make me feel grateful, grateful to everybody who was there and grateful to the good Lord for the big gift that I was given," he adds.

Because of this, Bocelli can only hope he used his "voice in a proper way during my career."
