Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers Overall: Helix Dawn Mattress
The Helix Dawn features soft memory foam and pocketed innerspring coils that offer just the right balance of contouring and bounciness. As Helix’s firmest model, the Dawn gives stomach sleepers the necessary hip and pelvis support to get a good night’s rest.
If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, you’ll find a lot to love with the Helix Dawn. Thanks to its sturdiness, enhanced by hundreds of individually wrapped coils, this mattress has enough support to keep your hips from dipping down out of alignment with your shoulders while you lie on your stomach, helping to prevent the buildup of lower back pain over time.
Our testing team appreciated the breathable fabric in the mattress’s pillow-top surface, which felt like it “kept air flowing throughout the night.” They also noted the Dawn’s bouncy feel and responsiveness, which made it easy to shift around or move into different positions. The edges of the bed offered good stability, so we didn’t feel like we were sliding off the sides at any point of the night—even when sleeping splayed out, starfish-style.
Best Firm Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Mattress
As its name suggests, the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm is a very firm mattress made of super high-density foam. You can flip it to one of two sides: a firm side that suits most stomach sleepers and firm bed fans, and an extra-firm side that works especially well for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. A thin polyfoam top layer adds a modicum of cushion so you won’t feel like you’re sleeping on a hardwood floor.
If you want to crank the firmness level of your bed all the way up, this flippable foam mattress is the way to go. Out of the hundreds of mattresses we’ve tested, the Plank Firm is the firmest—particularly when you position it with the extra-firm side up. We gave this side of the mattress a 9 out of 10 for firmness, while its regular-firm side earns a (still impressive) 8 out of 10. That’s why this bed works best for stomach sleepers and sleepers over 230 pounds who don’t mind a comparative lack of cushion in its high-density foam.
In our tests, we found the Plank Firm did a really great job of preventing the hips from sinking in, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. These findings are backed by an endorsement from the American Chiropractic Association, which names it as a bed that alleviates back pain—partially due to that hip and lumbar support, which helps keep your spine in a more neutral position overnight.
Something our testing team also found is that the Plank Firm isn’t the most breathable mattress around, simply due to the fact that it’s made from high-density foam that doesn’t leave a lot of room for air flow. You can offset this downside by adding on the optional cooling cover and maybe even tossing in some cooling sheets.
Best Mattress for Side and Stomach Sleepers: Saatva Classic Mattress
The Saatva Classic delivers breathability, high-quality materials, and contouring pressure relief for your joints in a single package.
Stomach sleepers and side sleepers have different—and often opposing—mattress needs. This means if you tend to alternate between the two sleep positions, it’s hard to find a bed that won’t represent some form of compromise. A softer mattress might feel good on your hips and shoulders when you’re curled up on one side, but it won’t be firm enough to support your lower half when resting on your stomach.
This is where the Saatva Classic’s Luxury Firm model comes through. The mattress not only has good “responsiveness,” which means it’s easy to shift positions on it, but it also has the right balance of cushion and firmness for both stomach and side sleepers—and for those who settle somewhere in the middle.
The Saatva threads this needle through its “zoned” firmness, which makes the bed feel softer where you need the cushion and firmer where your body needs more bolstering. It also has a patented lumbar technology that helps keep your spine in a comfortable, neutral alignment. Aside from the overall elevated support, the mattress also has stiffly reinforced edges, so you can really spread out on it without feeling like you might roll off the bed. Just note that while side sleepers and combination sleepers can happily compromise on the Luxury Firm version, true stomach sleepers will appreciate the support of the Firm option.
Best Affordable Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress
The firmer-than-average DreamCloud Hybrid has contouring foam layers for a bit of cushion near the top, plus a sturdy innerspring coil mid-layer that provides lots of support for the hips and lower back. Stomach and back sleepers will find a lot to love here—including its sub-$1,000 (after ongoing deals) price tag.
The DreamCloud Hybrid checks all the boxes for stomach sleepers, including that it’s firmer than average (our testers gave it a 7.5 out of 10) while including just enough memory foam plushness to keep your hips well-cushioned. In our testing, we also found the DreamCloud to be one of the most responsive mattresses in the lineup, which means it bounces back quickly when you move around on it. This bouncy feel makes it easy to change positions or get out of bed, so it’s a good option for combination stomach sleepers who flip-flop onto their sides or backs throughout the night.
Sweaty sleepers will find the DreamCloud Hybrid a breath of fresh air, thanks to its well-placed innersprings that allow plenty of airflow. Our testers especially appreciated the mattress’s cashmere-blend cover, which feels extremely breathable and cool to the touch. But on the other side of the coin from the DreamCloud’s bounciness is the fact that it doesn’t isolate motion well, so you might be awakened by your partner’s (or even pet’s) every restless movement. We also found the bed doesn’t have the best support along the edges, so if you like to spread out to the far reaches of the bed, you might feel some sagging.
Best Hybrid Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: The WinkBed Mattress
The WinkBed hybrid mattress provides loads of necessary support and alignment for stomach sleepers in its Luxury Firm and Firmer models. Its luxe pillow top has multiple layers of foam to bring you premium comfort, while the individually wrapped coils are strategically positioned throughout the mattress to give you support through the hips and lower spine.
The WinkBed is one of the most popular mattresses with our testers, and for good reason. The hybrid is available in four firmness options, from “softer” to a plus model designed for those over 230 pounds. (We recommend the firmer models for stomach sleepers.)
The mattress is constructed with a combination of foam layers and individually wrapped coils that provide targeted support in areas of the back that press down more, giving it that classic hybrid feel. Our testers found it to be especially supportive when sleeping on their stomach, as they got the necessary lifted feel and little to no sinking or discomfort throughout the night.
Whether you’re a light sleeper woken by the slightest disturbance or you sleep with a bedmate who constantly rotates like a gas station hot dog, the WinkBed comes through in the motion isolation department. The edge support is also sublime: Our testers were impressed by its stability along the sides of the mattress, making it a sag-proof option if you have mobility issues or just like to occupy all available real estate on the bed. A note for hot sleepers: Although this mattress comes with three layers of heat-wicking materials, our testers found that it didn’t sleep as cool as many of the other hybrids we tested.
Best Mattress for Back and Stomach Sleepers: Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress
The Bear Elite Hybrid’s “firm” model has just what you need to stay comfortable and supported in both back and side sleeping positions—namely, pocketed innerspring coils that deliver support exactly where you need it beneath a memory foam layer that adds cushion and pressure relief.
The Bear Elite Hybrid is built with a combination of dense memory foam and sturdy innerspring coils to provide firm cushion where you need it (aka through the hips and low back region) and a bit more softness everywhere else. We recommend it to not just back and stomach sleepers but also those who need a mattress for back pain, because it has strategic zoned support which can help keep your spine in a more comfortable, neutral position all night long.
A sleeper hit with everyday athletes, Bear’s mattress is also known for its advanced cooling features, like its use of phase-change materials to absorb body heat and Celliant fibers to better regulate your body temp. (For those of us who aren’t material engineers, phase-change materials are substances that can store and release heat in phases to keep you from sleeping too hot or too cold, while Celliant fibers are designed to promote better circulation.) Our testers were skeptical of Bear’s claims that these features can promote post-workout recovery—we’d need more testing to know for sure—but we did find that the mattress sleeps noticeably cooler than most.
Best Cooling Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort Mattress
Struggling with night sweats? The Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort boasts a moisture-wicking cover, gel-infused foam, and a breathable innerspring layer for cooler sleep.
One of the most affordable mattresses on the list, the Emma Hybrid Cooling Comfort is also a great choice for stomach sleepers, thanks to its firm support and elevated feel through the hips. But where it really stands out is in its consistently cool feel.
After taking a very sci-fi looking thermal gun to our mattress testing processes, the results were clear: The Emma Hybrid is one of the best cooling mattresses around. It kept our team dry and cool by absorbing and dispersing excessive body heat, even when we slept in our (incredibly sexy) long, full-coverage pajamas. These cooling powers came courtesy of a light, moisture-wicking cover that feels cool and breathable, as well as a hybrid construction that allows for plenty of airflow through the springs. The bed’s high-density foams and inner pocketed springs also offer top-notch support with minimal motion transfer, so you’ll stay sound asleep even when your partner leaves the bed for a midnight snack.
Best Organic Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: Birch Natural Mattress
The Birch Natural is a firmer-than-average bed built from chemical-free natural latex and certified organic wool. It’s got that textbook latex feel—it’s so bouncy and responsive that you’ll feel like you’re almost floating above the mattress instead of sleeping in it, memory foam-style.
If you're passionate about farm-fresh produce and know exactly what natural materials feel best on your body (linen, FTW), you need an organic mattress to complete the vibe. The eco-friendly Birch Natural is free from any potentially harmful materials, like the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that some lower-quality mattresses made from polyurethane foam have been found to emit.
Its top cover, quilted with organic cotton, offers ultimate softness and breathability, while the layers of organic wool beneath are also breathable and cushion your movements with a natural plush feel. Inside, it has more than a thousand individually pocketed coils for customized support, as well as two layers of natural latex placed in the middle of the mattress, which provide enhanced responsiveness and pressure relief. The firmness of these layers makes it a top choice for stomach sleepers, since it bolsters the hips and won’t let your lower half sink in too far.

How We Tested Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers
Our sleep team has tested more than 500 mattresses to determine which work best for every type of sleeper so you don’t waste your time and money on a bed that isn’t right for you. To provide you with first-hand insight into what it’s like to lie on these beds, we evaluate each mattress’s materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling. We then translate the marketing jargon into bottom-line, actually useful features so we can demystify what you’re getting from each mattress.
Since the main benefit of buying a bed online is convenience, we also report on the shopping experience, like setup, delivery, trial period, and warranty. This makes it easier for you to pick the mattress that best suits your sleeping needs and budget, so you can enjoy your new bed to the fullest.
Here's more intel on our testing process.
What to Look for in a Mattress for Stomach Sleepers
Buying a mattress as a stomach sleeper is a bit more nuanced than shopping as a side sleeper or back sleeper—but it’s crucial to get it right. “A mattress that isn’t supportive, or too soft, can add stress to the natural curve in the lower back and add to the extension and or rotation of the neck in a person that sleeps on their stomach,” Lees says. “This can lead to back and neck pain, headaches, and unrestful sleep.”
Firmness
A mattress on the firmer side is key to keeping your hips elevated, but your mattress should also strike a balance between comfort and support: It should be soft enough for you to feel relaxed and cozy when you’re tucked in for the night, but not too soft. You don’t want your lower half to sink too far into the bed because that could put your spine and neck in cramped positions for extended periods of time.
Mattress Support
Rather than too plush, you need your mattress to have stability to keep your spine straight and naturally extended. For those weighing under 230 pounds, mattresses in the medium-to-high firmness range should be enough. If you’re over 230 pounds, opt for mattresses on the high end of the firmness spectrum. Thankfully, the beds on this list were hand-selected (and tested) for stomach sleepers—and a few of them have multiple firmness options.
Best Types of Mattresses for Stomach Sleepers
When looking for a new mattress, you’ll encounter several different types of materials, each with different advantages and disadvantages. Here’s what to know about each.
Memory Foam
Memory foam tends to work a little bit like Play-Doh—it molds to your body’s angles and curves. This molded feel can help in terms of providing good contouring and pressure relief, but it’s not as successful at providing enough support and guidance for your spine. Memory foam mattresses also tend to sleep warmer than innerspring or hybrid beds.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses are the best of both worlds: They have strong support through the use of innerspring coils, surrounded by multiple layers of cushiony foam. They’re more supportive than a solely foam mattress, but they also have a nice plush feel. A firm hybrid mattress with spine-specific targeted support zones is the smart option for most stomach sleepers.
Latex
Typically derived from rubber trees, natural latex isn’t as common as memory foam in mattresses, but it has plenty of advantages—including the fact that it’s a great option for stomach sleepers. It’s often more supportive and responsive than memory foam, and it also tends to sleep cooler throughout the night. Latex mattresses are naturally resistant to mold and mildew, and since they’re ultra-durable, they can last for up to two decades.
How to Sleep More Comfortably on Your Stomach
The first place to start for a more comfortable stomach sleep is with your mattress.
Once you’ve found something firm enough to support your hips and back, it’s time to consider the accessories, which can make or break your sleep experience. A thin pillow can prevent you from putting too much strain on your neck by causing it to wrench upward. You might also consider sleeping in a “freefall” position, with your arms up, legs wide, and head tilted to one side. This can help your spine better maintain its natural curve.
FAQ
Is it bad to sleep on your stomach?
Sleeping on your stomach isn’t inherently bad, but without the correct form, it can lead to back and neck pain over time. Be sure to sleep with a thin pillow or no pillow, and sleep in a position that puts your spine in a neutral position where tension isn’t building up in your lower back.
Is a soft or firm mattress better for stomach sleepers?
Firm mattresses are better for stomach sleepers. A mattress that’s too soft will cause your hips to sink into the bed, forcing your spine out of proper alignment.
How can I avoid sleeping on my stomach?
The easiest way to avoid stomach sleeping is with pillows as “training wheels.” You can use a cervical support pillow to keep your neck and shoulders in place, or body pillows to prevent turning completely onto your stomach.
What kind of accessories should stomach sleepers use?
Stomach sleepers should use a thin or “low-loft” pillow. These pillows are flatter than normal pillows and let your head rest in a more neutral position. For more, check out our list of the best pillows for every type of sleeper.
