Toyota Bids Farewell to the A90 GR Supra with Special Final Edition Models

Toyota revealed two final special editions of its current-generation A90 GR Supra, the GR Supra Lightweight Evo and the GR Supra A90 Final Edition, both built to commemorate the sports car’s nearly six-year series production run. Unfortunately for North American customers, the special editions are unlikely to be seen in the United States anytime soon.

The GR Supra Lightweight Evo is Toyota’s newest unique performance model that sports various upgrades from the base GR Supra, first introduced in 2019 and mildly updated in 2020 and 2022. Meanwhile, the limited-production GR Supra A90 Final Edition celebrates this model’s series production run with even more power and upgrades.

What We Know About the Toyota GR Supra Lightweight Evo

Toyota’s GR Supra Lightweight Evo model was built with European customers in mind, expressing a lightweight version of the current Supra that sports harder edges that matches the car’s enhanced driving experience.  Described as a faster and more performance-oriented model, the GR Supra Lightweight Evo is equipped with a long list of chassis and suspension upgrades.

Specifics in the press release include the optimization of the electronically controlled dampers, a stiffer front stabilizer bar, stronger suspension bushings in the front and rear, and a stiffer under-body brace to improve chassis torsional rigidity. This model also sees a weight reduction, hence its name. The exact numbers were not shared in the initial press release, but Toyota says revised exterior body panels contribute to the sports car’s weight reduction while improving aerodynamics and overall handling at-speed. Toyota’s engineers also modified the car’s steering box and electric power steering assist to boost road feel and weighting.

Extra styling points are gained with visual upgrades like the bespoke 19-inch black-painted wheels and the Alcantara-lined interior with contrasting colored stitching.

This car uses the same 3.0l turbo straight-six as the base GR Supra, which offers 382 horsepower to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission and tops out at 155 miles-per-hour.

What We Know About the GR Supra A90 Final Edition

The GR Supra A90 Final Edition will leave the factory with more power, improved suspension and steering, and bespoke appointments and accessories for a proper send off. Most importantly, the Final Edition will be unleashed with 425 horsepower, a decent bump from the base model’s 340 horses. The torque also sees a jump from 369 to 420 pound-feet. The Final Edition not only achieves faster acceleration, but also a higher top speed of 168 miles-per-hour, around 12 mph more than the original.

The suspension is built to handle the extra power with the addition of adjustable KW dampers, which offers up to 16 rebound and 12 compression settings depending on the driving conditions. Handling is further improved by a camber angle adjustment at both the front and rear axles, which is said to increase the car’s overall grip. Toyota notes that the differential also received a few tweaks to reduce understeer, and the steering system is improved to provide a more direct feel.

Since higher speeds and more agile handling are expected with the Final Edition, Toyota engineers improved the car’s lubrication system to prevent oil starvation when hit with higher g forces in the corners. The cooling system also gains a heavy-duty radiator, and the rear differential gets revised cooling fins. Meanwhile, wider tires wrapped around lightweight 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inch wheels in the rear offer even more stability and traction, and enhanced brakes give the car stronger stopping power.

The GR Supra A90 Final Edition is limited to just 300 total worldwide. None are expected to roll into the United States’ market. Toyota says orders for the GR Supra Lightweight Evo and the GR Supra A90 Final Edition will open in Europe by January 2025, with deliveries scheduled to start in spring. The model is also expected to be offered in Australia and Japan.

As far as the future of the Toyota Supra, a new generation of the sports car is already under development, however the next generation’s powertrain details and debut date are still a mystery.
