Ram’s first electric truck, the 1500 REV hits a roadblock
Stellantis claims the all-electric Ram 1500 REV will outperform every other full-size truck, but now the EV has been delayed to the first half of 2025.
The Ram 1500 REV, an all-electric version of the popular full-size pickup, originally debuted at CES 2023 as a concept vehicle. At the time, Stellantis claimed the electric truck would launch by the end of 2024, but that’s no longer the case. The Ram 1500 REV’s arrival is now delayed until the first half of 2025 as the umbrella company manages its portfolio of upcoming all-electric launches.

The Ram REV will “outperform all competitors”
According to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, the Ram 1500 REV, which is short for Revolution Battery-electric vehicle, will outperform all of its competitors. Currently, the Ford F-150 Lighting and Chevrolet Silverado EV are the only full-size electric trucks that legacy automakers have to offer. Other smaller full-size electric trucks, like Rivian R1T, offer more competition in the segment, but their availability tends to vary.
Stellantis launched its new STLA Frame platform in early November. The new platform will underpin more capable vehicles, like the Ram and Jeep EVs, with room for a larger battery pack. Overall, the platform provides class-leading capability, with a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 lbs., a payload rating of 2,700 lbs., and a range of up to 500 miles. It will also underpin hybrid and range-extended electric vehicles (REEV).
The upcoming Ram 1500 REV and REEV will ride on that new STLA Frame platform and deliver exactly what Stellantis has promised, at least on paper. The full-size electric pickup will boast a 14,000 lb. maximum towing capacity and a 2,700 lb. payload capacity. Powered by a 168-kWh battery, the Ram 1500 REV boasts an estimated 350-mile range. The REEV version will offer an estimated 690-mile range.
For comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning offers up to 320 miles of range and a 10,000 lb. maximum towing capacity. The Chevrolet Silverado EV does better, going further with a 460-mile range and a 12,500 lb. maximum towing capacity. If the Ram 1500 REV’s specs are based on real-world tests, the upcoming electric truck will surpass its full-size competitors with relative ease.

Stellantis has a handful of EVs incoming
Currently, Stellantis is falling behind other legacy automakers, many of whom are struggling themselves. The umbrella only has one electric vehicle on the market, the Fiat 500e. In the coming year, Stellantis plans to launch EVs under the Jeep and Dodge brands, in addition to the Ram 1500 REV.
Jeep already offers a small electric SUV in Europe known as the Avenger EV, but that wasn’t going to fit the brand’s image in the United States. Instead, the rugged off-road marque plans to launch the Wagoneer S in the United States and Canada before introducing it to other markets. The Wagoneer S would be Jeep’s first official global EV. According to Stellantis, the Jeep Wagoneer S will offer more than 300 miles of range and around 600 horsepower.
Dodge has been in an odd place over the past few years, but the performance brand could change course with the introduction of the world’s first all-electric muscle car. The 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona will hit the road with all-wheel drive and dual electric motors that generate 670 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of instant torque. That kind of performance results in a 0-to-60 MPH time of just 3.3 seconds.
Stellantis also has a couple of other all-electric vehicles in the works. The upcoming Jeep Recon EV will ride on the STLA platform and feature a more off-road design. A Dodge Hornet EV could also be in the works and is likely to be a more city-friendly version of the Recon EV. A Dodge Challenger EV is forthcoming as well, following the iconic muscle car’s exit after the 2023 model year.
Final thoughts
The Ram 1500 REV’s delay is a mixed bag. Stellantis claims they want to ensure the quality is there but the hold-up could put potential consumers on shaky ground. With the new STLA platform in play, the Ram 1500 REV certainly has the potential to lead in its segment, at least among legacy automakers.
Stellantis seems to be pretty confident in expanding their EV offerings, an odd move given that the umbrella claimed that they don’t expect strong demand for EVs. Consider it future-proofing, I suppose.
